Joyeuse Saint-Valentin!—Avec une chanson d’amour française Posted by on Feb 14, 2011 in Music, Vocabulary

Whether you see la Saint-Valentinas an authentic fête de l’amour(love celebration) or merely un prétexte purement commercial(A purely commercial pretext), today’s post presents to you a French song by a singer who has been singing for l’amour, and about l’amour, not only in Valentine’s, but also during the other 364 days of the year. His name is Frédéric François(—Not Chopin, just that, Frédéric François!), and his love song is titled Mon cœur te dit je t’aime” (“My Heart Tells You I Love You.”)

Frédéric François—Mon cœur te dit je t’aime” (“My Heart Tells You I Love You”)

La maison a l’air plus grande,

The house seems bigger

Surtout la chambre,

Especially the room,

Il ne reste rien de toi que ton parfum

Nothing but your perfume remains of you

Je découvre en ton absence,

I discover in your absence

Un vide immense

An immense emptyness

En voyant s’ouvrir les roses du jardin,

Seeing the garden roses opening

Je vis près du téléphone,

I live nearby the phone,

Mais quand il sonne,

But when it rings,

C’est jamais le coup de fil que j’espérais,

It’s never the call that I hoped for,

Tu m’oublies et moi je chante,

You forget me and I sing,

Mais si je chante,

But if I sing,

C’est seulement pour me retenir de pleurer.

It’s only to hold myself from crying.

Mon cœur te dit je t’aime,

My heart tells you I love you,

Il ne sait dire que ça,

It only knows saying that

Je ne veux pas te perdre,

I don’t want to lose you

J’ai trop besion de toi,

I need you so much,

Mon cœur te dit je t’aime,

My heart tells you I love you,

Il est perdu sans toi,

It’s lost without you,

Mon cœur te crie je t’aime,

My heart screams to you I love you,

A chaque fois qu’il bat.

Each time it beats.

C’est surtout lorsque je rentre,

It’s mostly when I get back home,

Que tu me manques,

That I miss you,

Il faut dire que chaque soir, tu m’attendais,

I’ve got to say that every evening, you waited for me

Et malgré ma solitude,

And despite my solitude,

Par habitude,

By habit,

Hier encore je t’ai fais chauffer du café,

Yesterday again, I prepared you some coffee,

Je dois perdre un peu la tête,

I must be losing my head a bit,

Dans ma défaite,

In my defeat,

Je t’invente et je ne sais plus où j’en suis,

I invent you and don’t know where I am anymore,

A nouveau tes yeux m’éclairent,

Once again your eyes enlighten me,

J’ai ta lumière en couleur sur des photos,

I have your light in color on photos,

Tu me souris.

You smile to me.

Mon cœur te dit je t’aime,

My heart tells you I love you,

Il ne sait dire que ça,

It only knows saying that,

Je ne veux pas te perdre,

I don’t want to lose you,

J’ai trop besion de toi,

I need you so much,

Mon cœur te dit je t’aime,

My heart tells you I love you,

Il est perdu sans toi,

It is lost without you,

Mon cœur te crie je t’aime,

My heart screams to you I love you,

A chaque fois qu’il bat.

Each time it beats.

Mon cœur te dit je t’aime,

My heart tells you I love you,

Il ne sait dire que ça,

It only knows saying that,

Je ne veux pas te perdre,

I don’t want to lose you,

J’ai trop besion de toi,

I need you so much,

Mon cœur te dit je t’aime,

My heart tells you I love you,

Il est perdu sans toi,

It is lost without you,

Mon cœur te crie je t’aime,

My heart screams to you I love you

A chaque fois qu’il bat.

Each time it beats
Mon cœur te dit je t’aime,

My heart tells you I love you,
La la la la ,la la,

La la la la la la, la

La la la la, la la

Mon cœur te dit je t’aime…

My heart tells you I love you…
