Les Comptines – Nursery Rhymes Posted by on Dec 17, 2021 in Culture, Language

Bonjour!

Children learn through song and nursery rhymes and I’m sure you know plenty from your childhood, but do you know the French ones below? 😊 Share them with any little ones in your life, or listen on your own and see if you can learn something just as a French native child would!

Dodo, l’enfant do
Dodo, l’enfant do
L’enfant dormira bien vite
Dodo, l’enfant do
L’enfant dormira bientôt.
Une poule blanche
Est là dans la grange.
Qui va faire un petit coco
Pour l’enfant qui va fair’ dodo.
Dodo, l’enfant do,
L’enfant dormira bien vite
Dodo, l’enfant do
L’enfant dormira bientôt.
Tout le monde est sage
Dans le voisinage
Il est l’heure d’aller dormir
Le sommeil va bientôt venir.

Lullaby, Child, Lullaby
Lullaby, child, lullaby
The child will quickly go to sleep
Lullaby, child, lullaby
The child will soon be asleep.
A white hen
Is there in the barn
It will lay an egg
For the child who’s going to sleep.
Lullaby, child, lullaby
The child will quickly go to sleep
Lullaby, child, lullaby
The child will soon be asleep.
Everybody’s good
In the neighborhood
It’s time to go to sleep
Very soon you’ll be asleep.

Une poule sur un mur
Une poule sur un mur
Qui picote du pain dur
Picoti, picota
Lève la queue
Et puis s’en va.

A hen on a wall
Pecking some dry bread
Pecky, peckay
Raises her tail
Then goes away.

Fais dodo, Colas mon p’tit frère
Fais dodo, Colas mon p’tit frère
Fais dodo, t’auras du lolo
Maman est en haut
Qui fait des gâteaux
Papa est en bas
Qui fait du chocolat
Fait dodo Colas mon p’tit frère
Fait dodo, t’auras du lolo.

Go to Sleep, Colas My Little Brother
Go to sleep, Colas my little brother
Go to sleep, you will have your milk
Mommy is upstairs
Making some cakes
Daddy is downstairs
Making hot cocoa
Go to sleep, Colas my little brother
Go to sleep, you will have your milk.
