Les Sœurs Boulay – Music From Québec Posted by John Bauer on May 31, 2017 in Music
Listening to la musique française (French music) is a good way to practice your French and have fun à la fois (at the same time). When you find un groupe that has a style you really you study all the time just by listening to them over and over.
Les Sœurs Boulay (The Boulay Sisters) are a folk duo from Québec that I stumbled upon par hasard (randomly) while je surfais sur Internet (I was surfing the Internet). La musique is a fun mix of whimsical lyrics and acoustic instruments. Leurs chansons (their songs) are very catchy and I cannot stop myself from singing along whenever I hear them.
Les Sœurs behind the group, Stéphanie et Mélanie Boulay, are originally from la Gaspésie au Québec and made a splash in the music scene when they won un concours (a competition) in 2012. Soon after le concours they recorded their first album, Le poids des confettis (the weight of the confetti). Since then les sœurs have also been featured on La Voix, The Voice au Québec, and released a second album.
L’accent canadien (the Canadian accent) that Les Sœurs Boulay have sticks out for people who are not used to it, but l’accent gives la musique a unique sound that I really enjoy. Even if I don’t always understand l’argot (the slang), les paroles (the lyrics) give me an excuse to look up les nouveaux mots (the new words).

You’ll never introduce me to your mother
Nor to your friends nor even to the boy with whom you live
It’s not that you’re not proud
But they wouldn’t understand
J’t’embrasserai jamais dans l’métro
J’attendrai sagement les blackouts au cinéma
J’encerclerai pas
De dates au calendrier
I’ll never kiss you in the subway
I’ll wait quietly for the cinema to go dark
I won’t circle
Dates on the calendar
Mais permets-moi de parler d’toi
Quand l’alcool m’aura dénudée
Ris pas si j’regarde mes emails
À toutes les heures de la journée
But let me talk about you
When alcohol will leave me unguarded
Don’t laugh if i check my emails
On every hour of the day
Regarde-moi quand tu m’prendras
Look at me when you hold me
Understand after that i’ll want to stay
Even if it’s written on the world map
That I’ll never be your girlfriend
Think of me without counting the days
Without counting the turns of my heart that goes around
Release your fingers
From the handbrake
Pour tout’ me raconter
I never wanted to be yours
Do what you want, but keep me your favorite place
Come back in the morning
To tell me everything
Pis permets-moi de parler d’toi
Quand l’alcool m’aura dénudée
Ris pas si j’regarde mes emails
À toutes les heures de la journée
And let me talk about you
When alcohol will leave me unguarded
Don’t laugh if i check my emails
On every hour of the day
Regarde-moi quand tu m’prendras
Look at me when you hold me
Understand that after i’ll want to stay
Even if it’s written on the world map
That I’ll never be your girlfriend.

mad tony:
worthy and typically Canadian ..but the key would be to braak records for sales of singing in French in the rest of Canada and then Europe. The best comparisons are Kate & Anna McGarrigle rather than Céline Dion, Diane Tell and Mylène Farmer.
In other words good song, good live but not a top song unlike Roch Voisine – Hélène or even Luc De Larochellière – Cash City .
Petra:
They are awesome! Thank you for the article 🙂
I like also the song “Par le chignon du cou”.
