German music and lyrics: Revolverheld „Das kann uns keiner nehmen“ Posted by on Oct 14, 2013 in Language, Music

One day last weeks I had to do some shopping. When I was waiting at the traffic light along with other cars I had the time to change the channels of my car radio. I often do this to find a song I like and to which I can sing along with. Eventually, I found a tuny one but couldn’t sing along with it immediately because that song was completely new to me. It was called “Das kann uns keiner nehmen” by Revolverheld and I fell in love with it straightaway. One the one hand, I love its melody and on the other hand, the lyrics affected me deeply.

The song is about the look back to one’s life, the look back to a rather happy-go-lucky time when you had hardly had any obligations, for example, in your childhood and adolescence. At these rathers early stage in life you usually dedicated most of your time to friends. This will change when you grow older. After the graduation from school people usually bend their thoughts on working life and founding a family. This again causes that you become more and more obliged to so-called „important concerns“. Spending time with friends fades into the background. This is what the song means to me. And what does it mean to you?

Das kann uns keiner nehmen – No one can take that from us

Alte Freunde wiedertreffen nach all’ den Jahr’n

Meeting old friends again after all the years

We’ve all experienced much and are still around

Today in the tavern at the corner – our first bar – it still looks like in the nineties

Manche sind geblieben und jeden Abend hier

Some have stayed and spend every evening here

Meine erste Liebe Wirkt viel zu fein dafür

My first love appears too decent for that

We are really that different and have come many miles today

But our friendship has remained because there’s more that binds us

Ooooooh

Das kann uns keiner nehmen

No one can take that from us

Ooooooh

Lasst uns die Gläser heben

Let’s raise our glasses

Ooooooh

Das kann uns keiner nehmen

No one can take that from us

The town gets light and we’re drinking a toast to life

We wrote on every wall that we have been there

And the moments linger and are priceless

We visited every village and every bar together

And when I will talk about it tomorrow then it sounds like enjoyment in life

Ooooooh

Das kann uns keiner nehmen

No one can take that from us

Ooooooh

Lasst uns die Gläser heben

Let’s raise our glasses

Ooooooh

Das kann uns keiner nehmen

No one can take that from us

The town gets light and we’re drinking a toast to life

And the tavern at the corner still got its light on

We are drinking schnaps, are smoking ciggies and we’re not changing

Und in der Kneipe an der Ecke

And the tavern at the corner

still has its lights on, still its lights

Und es ändert sich nicht

And it’s not changing

Das kann uns keiner nehmen

No one can take that from us

Ooooooh

Das kann uns keiner nehmen

No one can take that from us

Ooooooh

Lasst uns die Gläser heben

Let’s raise our glasses

Ooooooh

Das kann uns keiner nehmen

No one can take that from us

The town gets light and we’re drinking a toast to life

Ooooooh, Ooooooh, Ooooooh

It’s 5 a.m. and we’re drinking a toast to life

About the Author: Sandra Rösner

Hello everybody! I studied English and American Studies, Communication Science, and Political Science at the University of Greifswald. Since I have been learning English as a second language myself for almost 20 years now I know how difficult it is to learn a language other than your native one. Thus, I am always willing to keep my explanations about German grammar comprehensible and short. Further, I am inclined to encourage you to speak German in every situation. Regards, Sandra

Hello, thank you for offering the lyrics and explanation of the song, Revolverheld’s “Das kann uns keiner nehmen.”
Can I share it in my blog?
After knowing that song’s lyrics, I tried to translate in Korean to share with another person.
But I was confused how can I translate well in Korean. (I am Korean!^^)
Because I have studied German about 1 year, but I still have difficulty to use German. But I’m used to learn English. So I could understand well your Englisch.

Thank you reading it, and I appreciate your posting!

Hi, I just found this song in the weekend, and what it says resembles perfectly what I’m living on these days. I noticed that ten years ago was my first day at the university where I met my best friends and many people that has gone but left me very good memories, and I this song reminds me all what I lived on those days.
Also this song and other ones are inspiring me to learn German, I just love how it sounds!!!!
Thank you for share the translation 🙂
