Γεια σας! In this post there are sixteen expressions and idioms with the adjective black (μαύρος, μαύρη, μαύρο). Some of them are common but others are rather old-fashioned.

 

Μαύρος can mean:

#1. black

Ο αδερφός μου αγόρασε ένα ωραίο μαύρο πουκάμισο.

My brother bought a nice, black shirt.

#2. dirty

Αυτό το μπλουζάκι θέλει πλύσιμο, έγινε μαύρο!

This T-shirt must be washed, it’s dirty!

#3. poor thing

Δουλεύει ο μαύρος σε τρεις δουλειές για να πληρώσει τα χρέη του.

The poor thing works three jobs in order to pay his debts.

#4. μαυρίζω:to get a suntan

Γεια σου Μαίρη, πήγες διακοπές; Ποπό πώς μαύρισες!

Hi Mary, were you on vacation? You are so tanned!

#5. μαυρίζω στο ξύλο / κάνω κάποιον μαύρο στο ξύλο: to spank

Οι γονείς της την μαύρισαν στο ξύλο γιατί πήρε το αυτοκίνητο χωρίς να τους ρωτήσει.

Her parents spanked her because she took the car without asking them (without their permission).

#6. μαύρη αγορά: black market

Κατάφεραν να βρουν εισιτήρια για τη συναυλία στη μαύρη αγορά.

They managed to find tickets for the concert on the black market.

#7. μαύρο χρήμα: black money

Το εστιατόρια που δεν κόβουν αποδείξεις βγάζουν μαύρο χρήμα.

Restaurants who do not issue receipts make black money.

#8. μαύρος χρυσός: black gold

Μαύρος χρυσός λέγεται αλλιώς το πετρέλαιο.

Black gold is another name for oil.

#9. μαύρο πρόβατο: black sheep

Λόγω της άστατης ζωής της, ήταν το μαύρο πρόβατο της οικογένειας.

Because of her unstable way of life, she was the black sheep of the family.

#10. μαύρη ώρα: a time when something bad happened

Μαύρη ώρα που έκανα εκείνο το ταξίδι. Όλα πήγαν στραβά.

I wish I had never made that trip. (Meaning: the moment I decided to take that trip was cursed) Everything went wrong.

#11. μαύρη μέρα: an unhappy day full of unpleasant events

Μη μου θυμίζεις εκείνη τη μαύρη μέρα!

Don’t remind me of that horrible day!

#12. μαύρη ζωή: life full of difficulties

Παντρεύτηκε έναν άντρα αλκοολικό. Μαύρη ζωή πέρασε μαζί του.

She got married to an alcoholic man. She led a terrible life with him.

#13. Μαύρη Ήπειρος: Dark Continent, Africa

Οι πρώτοι άνθρωποι έζησαν στη Μαύρη Ήπειρο.

The first humans lived in the Dark Continent.

#14. μαύρα μάτια κάναμε να σε δούμε: we haven’t seen you in a long time

Πού είσαι ,ρε Αντώνη, μαύρα μάτια κάναμε να σε δούμε!

Where are you Andoni, we haven’t seen you for ages!

#15. γράφω στα μαύρα κατάστιχα: feeling resentful about someone

Από τότε που έμαθε ότι διέδωσε τις φήμες σε βάρος του, την έγραψε στα μαύρα κατάστιχα.

Since he found out that she spread the rumors against him, he is very hostile towards her.

#16. ρίχνω μαύρη πέτρα (lit: to throw a black stone): to leave and never come back

Εδώ και πενήντα χρόνια που έφυγε για την Αμερική, έχει ρίξει μαύρη πέτρα.

He has gone to the United States fifty years ago and has not come back.
