The word μαλλί takes different meanings depending on the context. It can mean hair, wool and yarn. There are many idioms and proverbs used in colloquial Greek.

Πόσο πάει το μαλλί; (How much does it cost?)

«Βρήκα δωμάτια στο καινούργιο ξενοδοχείο.» «Πόσο πάει το μαλλί;» (“I found rooms at the new hotel.” “How much do they cost?”)

 

Μαλλί της γριας (old woman’s hair)

It means cotton candy.

Τα παιδιά αγόρασαν ποπ κορν και μαλλί της γριας. (The children bought popcorn and cotton candy.)

 

Μαλλιά κουβάρια

Κουβάρι is a ball of yarn. We use this expression when people have a serious argument.

Όταν ο συμβολαιογράφος διάβασε τη διαθήκη, τα δυο αδέρφια έγιναν μαλλιά κουβάρια.

(When the notary read the will, the two brothers had a fight.)

 

Σαν της τρελής τα μαλλιά (literally, like the mad woman’s hair)

We use it to mean that something is a mess.

Γιατί δεν τακτοποιείς τη ντουλάπα σου; Έχει γίνει σαν της τρελής τα μαλλιά. (Why don’t you clean up your wardrobe? It’s a total mess.)

 

Τραβηγμένος-η-ο από τα μαλλιά (literally, pulled by the hair)

It means far-fetched.

Δεν μου άρεσε η ταινία. Το σενάριο ήταν τραβηγμένο από τα μαλλιά. (I didn’t like the movie. The story was far-fetched.

 

Μάλλιασε η γλώσσα μου (my tongue grew hair)

We use it when we make repeated efforts to convince someone.

«Δεν του είπες ότι η Άννα δεν θα τον ξαναδεί;» «Όλο το πρωί αυτό του λέω. Μάλλιασε η γλώσσα μου!» (“Didn’t you tell him that Anna won’t see him again?” “That’s what I have been telling him all morning. My tongue grew hair.”)

 

Ο πνιγμένος απ’τα μαλλιά του πιάνεται (a drowning man will clutch at a straw)

Γιατί αγόρασε αυτοκίνητο στη γυναίκα του; Προσπάθησε να σώσει το γάμο του. Ο πνιγμένος απ’ τα μαλλιά του πιάνεται. (“Why did he buy his wife a car?” “He tried to save his marriage. A drowning man will clutch a straw.”)

 

Πήγα για μαλλί και βγήκα κουρεμένος. Κουρεμένος is one with trimmed hair.

It is said for someone who wants to gain something but loses out at the end.

Ο Γιάννης πήγε να ζητήσει αύξηση και τον απέλυσαν. Πήγε για μαλλί και βγήκε κουρεμένος. (Giannis asked for a pay rise and got fired).

 

Πληρώνω τα μαλλιά της κεφαλής μου (literally, to pay the hair of my head)

It is said when one spends a lot of money on something.

Πληρώνουν τα μαλλιά της κεφαλής τους για το ιδιωτικό σχολείο των παιδιών τους. (They pay a lot of money for their children’s private school).
