Ten Common Greek verbs in the Imperative Mood Posted by on Jul 31, 2019 in Grammar

 

Γεια σας! In this post we will see the Imperative mood of ten passive verbs which are commonly used by native speakers. The tenses given are Ενεστώτας (Present), Αόριστος (Past Simple) and Προστακτική (Imperative).

#1. Ενεστώτας:έρχομαι (to come)

Αόριστος:ήρθα

Προστακτική:έλα / ελάτε

Example:Παιδιά, ελάτε μέσα, βρέχει! / Children, come in, it’s raining!

 

#2. Ενεστώτας:ετοιμάζομαι (to get ready)

Αόριστος:ετοιμάστηκα

Προστακτική:ετοιμάσου / ετοιμαστείτε

Example:Μαρία, ετοιμάσου, έρχεται ο πατέρας σου. / Maria, get ready, your father is coming.

 

#3. Ενεστώτας:σηκώνομαι (to get up, to rise)

Αόριστος:σηκώθηκα

Προστακτική:σήκω/ σηκωθείτε

Example: Σήκω, είναι εννέα η ώρα. / Get up, it’s nine o’clock.

 

#4. Ενεστώτας:ντύνομαι (to get dressed)

Αόριστος:ντύθηκα

Προστακτική:ντύσου / ντυθείτε

Example: “Ντυθείτε”, είπε η νοσοκόμα. / “Get dressed”, said the nurse.

 

#5. Ενεστώτας:ξεκουράζομαι (to rest)

Αόριστος:ξεκουράστηκα

Προστακτική:ξεκουράσου / ξεκουραστείτε

Example: Ξεκουραστείτε μία ώρα γιατί έχουμε πολλή δουλειά μετά. / Take a rest because we have a lot of work later.

 

#6. Ενεστώτας:πλένομαι (to wash oneself)

Αόριστος:πλύθηκα

Προστακτική:πλύσου / πλυθείτε

Example: Πλύσου. Τα μαλλιά σου είναι γεμάτα σκόνη. / Wash yourself. Your hair is full of dust.

 

#7. Ενεστώτας:σκέφτομαι (to think)

Αόριστος:σκέφτηκα

Προστακτική:σκέψου /σκεφτείτε

Example: Σκέψου πριν κάνεις τις ασκήσεις. / Think before you do the exercise.

 

#8. Ενεστώτας:κάθομαι (to sit)

Αόριστος:κάθισα

Προστακτική:κάθισε (κάτσε) / καθίστε

Example: Χαίρετε. Καθίστε, παρακαλώ. / Hello. Please, sit.

 

#9. Ενεστώτας:θυμάμαι (to remember)

Αόριστος:θυμήθηκα

Προστακτική:θυμήσου / θυμηθείτε

Example: “Η γυναίκα που ήταν με τον Αντρέα είχε ξανθά μαλλιά ή μαύρα;” “Δεν θυμάμαι.” “Θυμήσου, σε παρακαλώ, έχει σημασία.” / “The lady who was with Andreas had blond hair or black hair?” “I don’t remember.” “Do remember, please, it is important” (literally)

 

#10. Ενεστώτας:κοιμάμαι (to sleep)

Αόριστος:κοιμήθηκα

Προστακτική:κοιμήσου / κοιμηθείτε

Example: Εγώ φεύγω τώρα. Κοιμήσου. / I go now. Sleep. (literally)

 

The Imperative has no negative form, so we use the negative form of the Subjunctive mood (Υποτακτική).

Examples:

Μην ντυθείς: don’t get dressed

Μην κοιμηθείτε: don’t sleep
