Γεια σας. The word σπίτι (house) is one of the first words students learn. In this post, there is vocabulary  morphologically related  to the words σπίτι and οίκος, which is the ancient Greek word for “house”.

#1.σπίτι: house / home

Το σπίτι μας έχει δύο υπνοδωμάτια, ένα σαλόνι, μία κουζίνα, ένα μπάνιο και ένα W.C (βεσέ).
Our house has two bedrooms, one living-room, one kitchen, one bathroom and one W.C.

#2.σπιτικός, σπιτική, σπιτικό: it is an adjective meaning homemade.
a.Πάρε λίγο τσουρέκι, είναι σπιτικό. Το έφτιαξε ο γιος μου.
Have some tsoureki (Easter bread), it is homemade. My son made it.
b.Η Μαρίνα δουλεύει πολύ και δεν έχει χρόνο να μαγειρέψει. Της λείπει το σπιτικό φαγητό.
Marina works a lot and she doesn’t have the time to cook. She misses homemade food.

#3.σπιτικό (το): home. It is dated but one can find it in texts.
Καλώς ήρθατε στο σπίτικό μας!
Welcome to our home!

 

 

#1.οίκος: it is the older form of “σπίτι”.

#2.οίκος μόδας: a place where fashion designers sell their clothes.
Η Σίλβια αγόρασε το νυφικό της από έναν πολύ γνωστό οίκο μόδας.
Silvia bought her wedding dress from a famous fashion store.

#3.οίκος ευγηρίας: rest home
O κύριος Αλέξανδρος μένει σε οικό ευγηρίας από τότε που έπαθε Αλτσχάιμερ.
Mr Alexandros lives in a rest home since he got Alzheimer’s.

#4.οίκος ανοχής: house of prostitution. This is a formal word.
Στο κέντρο της πόλης λειτουργούν παράνομα εξακόσιοι οίκοι ανοχής.
At the center of the city, 600 houses of prostitutions are illegal (work illegally).

#5.Λευκός Οίκος: White House
Ο Λευκός Οίκος είναι στην Ουάσινγκτον.
The White House is in Washington.

 

 

Common words deriving from οίκος:

#1.οικιακός, οικιακή, οικιακό: it is an adjective meaning domestic .
a.οικιακή βοηθός (η): domestic helper. The majority are women.
Προσέλαβαν μία οικιακή βοηθό για τις δουλειές του σπιτιού.
They hired a house helper for the housework
b.οικιακή συσκευή (η): appliance
Από τις 3 ως τις 5 Μαρτίου έχουμε 30% έκπτωση στις οικιακές συσκευές!
From the 3rd to the 5th of March, we offer 30% discount on appliances!
c.οικιακός εξοπλισμός (ο): house equipment
“Με συγχωρείτε, πουλάτε μπλέντερ;” “Όχι, λυπάμαι. Δεν πουλάμε είδη οικιακού εξοπλισμού.”
“Excuse me, do you sell blenders?” “No, sorry. We don’t sell appliances.” (είδος means item)

#2.νοικοκυρά (η): housewife / a neat and tidy woman
a.Η Σοφία δεν δουλεύει πια. Είναι νοικοκυρά.
Sophia does not work anymore. She is a housewife.
b.Η Σοφία είναι πολύ καλή νοικοκυρά. Το σπίτι της είναι πεντακάθαρο!
Sophia is a very tidy woman. Her house is spotless!

#3.νοικοκύρης (ο): It can be used to mean “landlord” but it is dated. We use instead the word σπιτονοικοκύρης. As an adjective, it means  neat and tidy.
Ο Γιώργος είναι νοικοκύρης. Στο σπίτι του όλα είναι σε τάξη.
Yiorgos is a tidy man. In his house everything is in order.

#4.ενοίκιο (το) / νοίκι (το): rent
Σήμερα είναι πρώτη του μηνός. Πρέπει να πληρώσουμε το ενοίκιο / νοίκι.
Today it’s the first day of the month. We have to pay the rent.

#5.νοικιάζω: to rent
a.Ο Μιχάλης και η Αρετή νοικιάζουν ένα πολύ ωραίο διαμέρισμα στα Εξάρχεια.
Mihalis and Aretee are renting a very nice apartment at Exarcheia.
b.Ο κύριος Μανόλης νοίκιασε το μαγαζί του σε μία κομμώτρια.
Mr. Manolis rented his store to a hairdresser.

#6.When writing a classified, we use the verb “ενοικιάζεται”. It means “is rented”.
Ενοικιάζεται διαμέρισμα 70 τ.μ. (τετραγωνικών μέτρων) κοντά στην Ακρόπολη.
Α 70 sq.m. apartment to rent near the Acropolis.

 

Special expressions

#1.σπιτόγατος (ο), σπιτόγατα (η): from σπίτι (house) + γάτος, γάτα (cat)
Σπάνια βγαίνουμε έξω το Σάββατο. Μένουμε στο σπίτι, μαγειρεύουμε, βλέπουμε ταινίες… Είμαστε σπιτόγατοι, τι να κάνουμε;
We rarely go out on Saturday. We stay home, we cook, we watch movies… We are homebodies, what can we do about it?

#2.κορίτσι από σπίτι: it is dated. It indicates that a young lady is well-bred and will be a good housewife.
H Στέλλα είναι ευγενική, μορφωμένη, τακτική, καλή μαγείρισσα… Κορίτσι από σπίτι!
Stella is polite, educated, tidy, a good cook… A well-bred girl!

#3.σπιτώνω (decreasingly): In the past, this verb was used when a person had an extra-marital affair and installed their lover in a small apartment and paid all the expenses. The adjective is σπιτωμένος, σπιτωμένη. Nowadays, it is dated but sometimes it is used when someone lives in their partner’s house and doesn’t pay for the expenses.
Ο Θάνος μένει εδώ και δύο χρόνια στην Φαίη. Δεν δουλεύει, κάθε μέρα είναι στα καφενεία και στα μπαρ και η Φαίη τα πληρώνει όλα. Είναι σπιτωμένος κανονικά.
Thanos has been living at Faye’s for two hears. He doesn’t work, everyday he’s at the cafes and the bars and Fay pays all the expenses. He literally lives at her expense.
