Γεια σας! Happy winter solstice! This year I will deviate from the Christmas-vocabulary posts and I will give you a list of words related to earth as a planet. If you want prefer to learn about Christmas check here, here and here.

 

#1. θερινό ηλιοστάσιο (το): summer solstice

Παράδειγμα:

Σε πολλές χώρες γιορτάζουν το θερινό ηλιοστάσιο. /In many countries, people celebrate the summer solstice.

 

#2. θερινός-η-ο: summer (adjective). It comes from the ancient Greek word θέρος which means hot weather. In modern Greek we use the adjective καλοκαιρινός.

Παράδειγμα: οι καλοκαιρινές διακοπές: summer holidays.

However, we still use the adjective θερινός in some phrases.

Παράδειγμα: ο θερινός κινηματογράφος: open-air cinema

 

#3. χειμερινό ηλιοστάσιο (το): winter solstice

Παράδειγμα:

Ο χειμώνας αρχίζει με το χειμερινό ηλιοστάσιο. / Winter begins with the winter solstice.

 

#4. χειμερινός-η-ο: winter (adjective).

Παράδειγμα:

Στην Ελλάδα έχουμε χειμερινές διακοπές μόνο τα Χριστούγεννα.

In Greece we take winter holidays only at Christmas.

We also use the adjective χειμωνιάτικος-η-ο.

Παράδειγμα:

Σήμερα είναι χειμωνιάτικη μέρα. The meaning of this sentence is that today the weather is cold. It is a “winter day”.

 

#5. εαρινή ισημερία (η): vernal equinox

Παράδειγμα:

Η εαρινή ισημερία είναι τον Μάρτιο. / The vernal equinox in on March.

 

#6. εαρινός-η-ο : vernal from the ancient Greek word έαρ which means spring.

#7. φθινοπωρινή ισημερία (η): autumnal equinox

Παράδειγμα:

Η φθινοπωρινή ισημερία στο νότιο ημισφαίριο είναι τον Μάρτιο./ In the Southern hemisphere, the autumnal equinox is on March.

 

#8. ίσος-η-ο: equal

Παράδειγμα:

Δεν βλέπουν όλα τα παιδιά τους ως ίσα. / They do not consider all their kids as equal.

 

#9. τροχιά (η): orbit

Παράδειγμα:

Η τροχιά της γης γύρω από τον ήλιο είναι ελλειπτική. The orbit of the earth around the sun is elliptic.

 

#10. άξονας (ο): axis

Παράδειγμα:

Η γη περιστρέφεται γύρω από τον άξονά της. / The earth rotates around its axis.

 

#11. βόρειο ημισφαίριο (το): Northern Hemisphere

#12.νότιο ημισφαίριο (το): Southern Hemisphere

Παράδειγμα:

Όταν στο βόρειο ημισφαίριο έχουμε καλοκαίρι, στο νότιο ημισφαίριο έχουν χειμώνα. / When it is summer in the Northern hemisphere, it is winter in the Southern hemisphere.

 

#13. δυτικό ημισφαίριο (το): Western Hemisphere

#14. ανατολικό ημισφαίριο (το): Eastern Hemisphere

Παράδειγμα:

Ο πρώτος μεσημβρινός χωρίζει τη γη στο δυτικό και το ανατολικό ημισφαίριο.

The Prime Meridian divides the earth to Western and Eastern hemispheres.

 

#15. μεσημβρινός (ο): meridian

Παράδειγμα:

Οι μεσημβρινοί συνδέουν τους δύο πόλους της γης. The meridians connect the two poles of the earth.

 

#16. ισημερινός (ο): equator

Παράδειγμα:

Η Κένυα είναι στον ισημερινό. / Kenya is on the equator.

 

#17.το δίσεκτο έτος / ο δίσεκτος χρόνος: leap year

Παλιά πίστευαν ότι ο δίσεκτος χρόνος φέρνει γρουζουσιά. In the past, people believed that a leap year brings bad luck.
