We all make wishes in our everyday life. If you want to express a hope or wish in Greek, this post might be useful.

Examples:

1. A wish that was not fulfilled in the past.

Μακάρι να + Παρατατικός:

Μακάρι να είχα χρήματα! Θα είχα αγοράσει εκείνο το αυτοκίνητο./ I wish I had money! I would have bought that car.

Μακάρι να + Υπερσυντέλικος:

Μακάρι να μην σε είχε γνωρίσει ποτέ! Θα ήταν πιο ευτυχισμένη τώρα. / I wish she had never met you! She would be happier now.

2. A wish that might have been already fulfilled.

Μακάρι να + Αόριστος:

Μακάρι να πλήρωσε τον λογαριασμό ο Μάριος! / I hope  Marios has paid the bill! (I don’t know if Marios has paid the bill).

Μακάρι να + Παρακείμενος:

Μακάρι τα παιδιά να έχουν κάνει τα μαθήματά τους και να κοιμούνται τώρα! / I wish the children have finished their homework and are asleep now. (I don’t know if the children have finished their homework.)

3. A wish that will not come true.

Τι καλά  / Μακάρι να + Παρατατικός:

Τι καλά / Μακάρι να πήγαινα στο σινεμά απόψε! Δυστυχώς, δεν έχω χρόνο. / I wish I had gone to the movies tonight! Unfortunately, I have no time.

4. A wish that may come true in the present or future.

Θα ήθελα + Συνεχής Υποτακτική:

Θα ήθελα να διαβάζεις περισσότερο. / I would like you to study more.

Μάκαρι + Απλή Υποτακτική:

Μακάρι να πάμε στην Ελλάδα το καλοκαίρι! / I hope we go to Greece in the summer!

   (A wish that may come true)
3. Μακάρι να έχει φύγει / να είχε φύγει η Μαρία. Δεν έχω όρεξη να την δω. 

   Σωστή απάντηση

   να έχει φύγει
   (We don’t know if Maria has gone or not).
4. Τι καλά που θα ήταν να πηγαίναμε / να πήγαμε στα Μετέωρα! Δυστυχώς, θα μείνουμε στην Αθήνα. 

   Σωστή απάντηση

   να πηγαίναμε
   (A wish that will not come true)
