Kenangan Masa Kecil Saya Posted by on Mar 29, 2016 in Uncategorized

Sharing childhood stories is always enjoyable, especially if you want to accelerate the learning of a new language. By talking about experiences and fond memories of your childhood, you can also build relationships with people you have just met. You can tell them about the places you have visited, games and activities, and even your favorite sport.

To help you, I wrote about my childhood in Indonesia using simple sentences and vocabulary for beginners.

Kenangan Masa Kecil Saya

Memories of my childhood

When I was little, my family often moved to various regions in Indonesia. We usually moved every two years as my father was assigned to head one of the branch offices where he worked, which were located throughout Indonesia.

My two siblings and I had to change schools frequently and adapt to the culture and local language of the new place to be able to communicate and make friends.

Saturdays and Sundays were my favorite days because my parents usually took us to visit touristic places and restaurants that served local specialties. My favorite activity was collecting handicrafts, which were typically made of skins, shells or bamboos.

When I was little, there were no computer or games as they are now, so I usually spent a lot of time playing outdoors with friends who lived near my house. We often played together after school and had lunch.

My favorite games and activities included badminton, jump rope, hopscotch, running, hide and seek, baseball, riding bikes, or picking mangoes from the trees in front yards, walking at the paddy dike while singing, chatting, and flying kites.

A beautiful childhood is difficult to forget.

What are the most moments that you miss in your childhood?

I have been teaching Indonesian to adult students for 15 years, and have been teaching students from many backgrounds, such as private, military and diplomatic service employees. I’m Indonesian, but am living in the US now; my exposure to different cultures in my home country and in the US has enriched my knowledge in teaching Indonesian as a second language. I approach the teaching of the Indonesian language by developing students’ critical cultural awareness and competence. This method of teaching has been proven to be a key to the success of my students. Students become conscious of the essential role culture plays in the language.
