Começamos março com os phrasal verbs! Sim, eles que são a pedra o sapato de muita gente, mas que também são extremamente necessários para sermos mais fluentes em inglês.

1. Fall over – cair, derrubar

I’m afraid that he might fall over again and hurt himself.
Receio que ele vá cair novamente e se machucar.

She still can’t walk properly – she keeps falling over.
Ela ainda não consegue andar direito – ela fica caindo.

I just touched the vase and it fell over – I swear!
Só encostei no vaso e ele caiu – juro!

 

2. Get over – sarar; recuperar-se; passar, transmitir; terminar; resolver; estar surpreso (usado na neg.)

It takes me ages to get over the flu.
Leva uma eternidade para eu me recuperar de uma gripe.

She never got over the death of her son.
Ela nunca se recuperou da morte de seu filho.

We have to get this message over to young people.
Temos que passar/transmitir esta mensagem para os jovens.

I’ll be in touch once I’ve gotten my exams over with.
Entrarei em contato assim que terminar minhas provas.

I can’t wait to get the interview over with.
Mal posso esperar para terminar esta entrevista.

I don’t know how we’re going to get over this problem.
Não sei como vamos resolver este problema.

3. Turn over – passar; entregar; render; rodar; virar

He’ll turn the store over to his son when he retires.
Ele passará a loja para o seu filho quando se aposentar.

I’m turning the project over to you.
Vou passar este projeto para você.

There is a new plan to turn the land over to wind farming.
Há um novo plano de passar a propriedade para parques eólicos.

Suspected terrorists are immediately turned over to the law.
Os supostos terroristas são entregues imediatamente à polícia.

Within ten years the theme park was turning over $20 million.
Dentro de dez anos o parque temático estava rendendo $20 milhões.

The engine turned over twice and then stopped.

4. Blow up – explodir; ficar bravo; encher (balão); ampliar (fotografia)

Meu pai ficou muito bravo quando descobriu que eu tinha amassado o carro.

We had to blow up the picture to make a huge poster.

5. Break up – quebrar (em pequenos pedaços); romper (relacionamento); separar; sumir (voz)

Break the chocolate up into squares.
Quebra o chocolate em quadradinhos.

I broke up with my girlfriend because she was cheating on me.
Larguei da minha namorada porque ela estava me traindo.

The police came to break up the fights.
A polícia veio separar as brigas.

I can’t hear you, you’re breaking up.

6. Bring up – criar, educar; mencionar, trazer à tona

He brought up his four children all by himself.
Ele criou seus quatro filhos sozinho.

I hate to bring this up, but you owe me $50.

7. Catch up – alcançar; colocar em dia

I can catch up with them if I hurry.
Posso alcançá-los se eu me apressar.

He’s missed so much school that he’s going to find it hard to catch up.
Ele perdeu tantas aulas que vai ser difícil ele alcançar os outros alunos.

I just need to go home and catch up on some sleep.
Só preciso ir para casa e colocar meu sono em dia.

8. Cheer up – animar(-se)

She always knows how to cheer me up when I’m feeling sad.
Ela sempre sabe como me animar quando estou me sentindo triste.

Cheer up! The worst is over.
Anime-se! O pior já passou!

 

9. Give up – parar de fazer algo; deixar; desistir; abrir mão de

His wife finally persuaded him to give up smoking.
Sua esposa finalmente o convenceu a parar de fumar.

Giving up his job was the last thing we expected him to do.
Deixar seu trabalho foi a última coisa que esperávamos que ele fizesse.

It was a difficult time, but we never gave up hope.
Foi uma época difícil, mas ele nunca perdeu a esperança.

We’ve given up trying to persuade them to change.
Desistimos de tentar convencê-los a mudar.

They agreed to give half their office up to the temporary staff.

10. Hang up – desligar (telefone)
