[Body language in English] What’s up, dear readers? E aí, caros leitores? Hora de botar um sorriso no rosto porque hoje é dia de post novo! Body language (linguagem corporal) é algo que faz parte de nossas vidas cotidianas mesmo sem nos darmos conta disso. Estamos sempre nos comunicando através de nossos corpos e transmitindo informações não-verbais com nossos movements (movimentos), gestures (gestos) e facial expressions (expressões faciais). Mas acredito que nem sempre sabemos o nome atribuído a essas ações tão presentes em nossa forma de se expressar. E é por isso que vamos aprender como elas se chamam e o que significam. Let’s dig in!

to frown | franzir a testa

It is normal to frown when we are thinking or feeling angry

• I noticed the teacher was frowning as she read my essay, so I guess she wasn’t really pleased with my writing | Percebi que a professora estava franzindo a testa enquanto lia meu texto, então acho que ela não estava muito satisfeita com minha escrita

to blush| corar

When people you are feeling shy or embarrassed, you usually blush.

• His compliments during the meeting made me blush | Seus elogios durante a reunião me fizeram corar

to smile | sorrir

You smile to express happiness, joy or friendliness

• Smile! It’s Friday, the weekend is coming! | Sorria! É sexta-feira, o fim de semana está chegando!

to shrug | encolher os ombros

People shrug when they are unsure of something or when they don’t care.

• I asked my boss for a raise but he simply shrugged, as if to say that there was nothing he could do about it | Pedi um aumento ao meu chefe, mas ele simplesmente deu de ombros, como se não houvesse nada que ele pudesse fazer a respeito

to wink | piscar

If you are trying to flirt or share a secret with someone, try to wink.

• I couldn’t tell if Richard was telling the truth, but then he winked at me and I knew he was just kidding | Não dava para saber se Richard estava dizendo a verdade, mas então ele piscou para mim e eu sabia que era só brincadeira

*atenção: quando usamos ambos os olhos dizemos blinking, mas com um olho só usa-se winking

to wave | acenar

When you are greeting someone, it is common to wave.

• A strange man was waving at me on the street, so I just waved back to be polite | Um homem estranho estava acenando para mim na rua, então eu simplesmente acenei de volta para ser educado

to yawn | bocejar

If you are feeling tired, bored or sleepy, you yawn.

• I was so exhausted yesterday that I could not help but yawn in the middle of the manager’s presentation | Ontem eu estava tão exausta que não pude deixar de bocejar no meio da apresentação do gerente

to nod | assentir, acenar com a cabeça

Whenever you agree with what is being said, you should nod your head.

• I asked my mom if I could borrow her car and she simply nodded, then I took it | Perguntei à minha mãe se eu poderia pegar emprestado o carro dela e ela simplesmente assentiu com a cabeça, então eu peguei 

to shake your head | balançar a cabeça

You shake your head to convey disagreement and disappointment.

• The lady at checkout shook her head when I tried to pay with my card, so I had to find an ATM | A moça do caixa balançou a cabeça quando tentei pagar com meu cartão, então tive que encontrar um caixa eletrônico

to bite your nails | roer suas unhas

If you get nervous or anxious, you might bite your nails.

• I used to bite my nails all the time during flights, but now I stopped  | Eu costumava roer minhas unhas o tempo todo durante voos, mas agora eu parei

to gape  | ficar boquiaberto

In moments of surprise, shock or disbelief, your mouth normally gapes.

• The tourists were gaping when they first saw Niagara Falls | Os turistas ficaram boquiabertos quando viram as Cataratas do Niágara pela primeira vez

to pout | fazer beicinho

To express discontent and disappointment, you can pout.

• You can pout all you want, Charlie, but you are not watching TV unless you finish your meal | Você pode fazer beicinho o quanto quiser, Charlie, mas não está assistindo TV, a menos que termine sua refeição
