Titles, Quotes, and Sayings in Irish to Practice Terms for ‘Daoine Muinteartha’ (Family Members), Cuid/Part 3 Posted by on Dec 6, 2016 in Irish Language

(le Róislín)

Beirt chlúiteach atá muinteartha dá chéile sa scannán Mo Chol Ceathar __ __ __ __ __ __, 1952. Tá an freagra in uimhir 3 i dtéacs na blagmhíre. An bhfuil a fhios agat cé hiad? Leid: is Breatnach duine amháin acu agus Briotanach-Mheiriceánach an duine eile. Ar ndóigh, is Cornaigh iad a gcarachtair sa scéal/scannán, mar an chuid is mó de charachtair du Maurier. OK, all of these deal with cousins, so I’ve filled in the Irish word for “cousin” where it appears in the singular.  The dúshlán, such as it is, for the entries that already have “col ceathar” in them (uimhreacha 1, 2, 3, agus 4) is to remember the name of the cousin – más féidir leat!  For number 5, we’re looking for the plural form (foirm iolra) of “cousin.”

  1. Mo Chol Ceathar _____, 1992, faoi dhlíodóir Nua-Eabhracach in Alabama
  2. Saoire Nollag 2: Eachtra Oileáin Chol Ceathar _____, 1992
  3. Mo Chol Ceathar _____, 2017 (iarléiriú á dhéanamh air faoi láthair), bunaithe ar úrscéal le Daphne du Maurier — ficsean Gotach abú!  Rinneadh scannán eile bunaithe ar an leabhar céanna i 1952 leis na haisteoirí sa phictiúr thuas)
  4. Col Ceathar _____, carachtar sa chlár teilifíse “Clann Mhic Adaim.” Is col ceathar le Gomez Addams é.
  5. Col _____, 1989 (leid: athleagan Béarla de scannán Francach ó 1975)

Speaking of cousins, here’s a link to a very short (03:12 nóiméad) student-made film in Irish, labeled “Transition Year Movie as Gaeilge – Buzzin Le Mo Chol Ceathrar“: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eknpU7bXCe4.  Rabhadh: the main themes seem to be ólachán, cártaí, púl, ceol ard, agus caitheamh amach, so I wouldn’t say it’s Joycean in its complexity, ach is cuma.  De réir cosúlachta bhí an-chraic ag na haisteoirí: Donnacha Griffin a phostáil é, Jimmy ‘tuffness’ Cassidy, agus Jack Rea.  Tugann siad “buzzin with me cuzin” ar an teideal ag deireadh an scannáin.  Mionleagan de “Lá Saor Ferris Bueller,” b’fhéidir?

BTW, I still stand by “col ceathar” and “col ceathrair” as the two typical forms for “cousin,” but, bhuel, pé rud is mian leo.

Agus seo nasc d’alt suimiúil faoi “Kissing Cousins,” ag caint faoi Thalamh an Éisc (Newfoundland, lit. land of the fish) agus Éirinn:  https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/kissing-cousins-irish-newfoundland-diaspora-matthew-barrett

Ironically, I’ve been on the lookout for a folksy Irish equivalent to the phrase “kissing cousins,” but all I come up with is “daoine muinteartha,” which literally means “related people,” i.e. “(extended) family members.”  And that’s the word we’ve been using as the title of this miniseries (teideal na mionsraithe seo) all along.  Tá súil agam gur bhain tú sult as blagmhír an lae inniu.  SGF — Róislín

Freagraí

1.. Mo Chol Ceathar Vinny, 1992, faoi dhlíodóir Nua-Eabhracach in Alabama.  My Cousin Vinny.

2.. Saoire Nollag 2: Eachtra Oileáin Chol Ceathar Eddie, 1992.  Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure

3.. Mo Chol Ceathar Rachel, 2017

4.. Col Ceathar Itt (le dhá “t”).  Is dócha gurb é “Addams” an sloinne atá air (Itt Addams, mar dhea) ach níl mé cinnte an bhfuil an t-eolas sin “de réir na canóna.”  Agus seans gur col ceathar ar thaobh mháthair Gomez é Itt.  Cén sloinne a bhí ar mháthair Gomez?  Diabhal a fhios agam agus níl a fhios agam an bhfuil an t-eolas sin sa chanóin.

5.. Col Ceathracha, 1989.  Ba é Cousin, Cousine (1975) an bunscannán Francach.

Freagra don cheist faoin bpictiúr: Richard Burton (mar Philip Ashley) agus Olivia de Havilland (mar Rachel Sangaletti, col ceathar Philip agus sa deireadh, a bhean, cé gur col ceathracha iad; hmm, b’fhéidir gur col seisreacha iad — ní cuimhin liom an bhfuil sé luaite sa leabhar).  Rinneadh an leagan seo den scannán i 1952.  Tá cúpla leagan eile ann: mionsraith BBC, 1983; athchóiriú le Joseph O’Connor sa Gate i 2012, agus leagan raidió ar BBC Radio 4 i 2011.

Gluais: á dhéanamh air, being done on it; athleagan, remake; bunaithe ar, based on; caitheamh amach, vomiting; ceol ard, loud music; de réir cosúlachta, apparently; dlíodóir, lawyer; dúshlán, [say “doo-hlawn”], challenge; eachtra, adventure; faoi láthair, currently; ficsean, fiction; Gotach, Gothic; iarléiriú, post-production; leid, hint, clue; más féidir, if it is possible (más = , if + is, is); mian, desire; mionsraith, mini-series (na mionsraithe, of the mini-series); oileán, island (oileáin, of an island); pé rud, whatever thing, rabhadh, warning; saoire, vacation; tugann siad … air, they call it … (lit. they “give” … on it); úrscéal, novel
