Mr. Black and the Telephone Pole

It’s half past three on Friday afternoon when we get home, tired but satisfied, after having spent a beautiful day walking amongst the olive groves overlooking the green sea.

Mr.Black!!! Geooofff, vieni immediatamente quiiiii” chiamo affannata.

Outside the house, whilst I rummage through my rucksack looking for the keys, I happen to glance down towards the valley. I stop suddenly: “What is that black hairy thing on top of the telephone pole, tangled amongst the cables? a dead crow?” I take a better look, my heart leaps into my throat “Oh my God, it’s … Mr. Black!!! Geooofff, come heeeere quickly” I call breathlessly.

Geoff e Mr.Black 006-002

Geoff runs over: “What is it?” he asks anxiously. I point to the telephone pole in front of our terrace: “Look, up there!” At first Geoff can’t believe his eyes, but then, without a moment’s hesitation he runs down to the foot of the pole: “Mr. Black! Mr. Black!” he calls the name of our cat number 8 several times. Finally, Mr. Black turns his head towards Geoff and meows desolately. Both myself and Geoff breath a sigh of relief: “Mr. Black is still alive!”

Then another thought hit us like lightning: “How will we get Mr. Black down? The pole is at least 8 metres (26 ft) high, and our step ladder is no longer than 3 metres”. Geoff begins going around the village asking all our neighbours if they had a long ladder, whilst I desperately try to phone the builder who lives in the village. We’ve only got 2 hours before night falls. After several attempts to find a long ladder Geoff meets Cristiano, a plumber, who lends him his one. It’s a professional folding ladder made up of four telescopic sections of about 2 metres each.

We go down to the pole and extend the ladder, not to its full length because it’s very heavy, and difficult to get upright once it’s extended. But there’s a problem: the ground is steep and uneven, the ladder won’t stand up. Geoff runs off to get some tools. With a mallet he flattens out the ground a bit, then after having stood the ladder up and leaned it against the pole, he drives two stakes into the ground and ties the ladder to the stakes and the pole.

Geoff e Mr.Black 004

Geoff begins to climb whilst I try to support the ladder with all my strength. I refuse to look up. The ladder isn’t long enough, but Geoff doesn’t want to waste time. Instead, he decides to extend it from where he is: with one hand he pulls the ladder away from the pole and with the other he tries to push up the last section. I shout at him not to be crazy, but he tells me that everything’s fine. After an eternity the ladder lengthens by a couple of rungs. The old telephone pole, despite being riddled with woodworm, holds up. Geoff manages to reach Mr. Black who, with a bit of encouragement, put a paw on his shoulder and then climbs into his arms. Luckily he’s a very calm cat! Rung after rung Geoff and Mr. Black climb down to the ground. “We’ve done it!” he shouts, punching his fist into the air. Then, after a moment’s reflection: “Wow, I could have killed myself!”

  1. Cathe Stock:

I enjoyed reading this so much. However did you ever hear of a cat dying in a tree or on a high pole. No? Correct! They are climbers and when Signore Nero became hungry enough he would have found his way down. My husband’s cat Bougainvillea (don’t ask!) got out of his former residence and was on the roof and my husband said, “We have to go get him.” He woke me up on a school night to tell me this. I said he will come down when he is hungry and sure enough by breakfast time Bugie was scratching at the back door. That was a long time ago and Bugie has gone to the Great Cat Mansion and we live in a different home. I have retired from teaching teenagers and now have the time to study Italian in Philadelphia which I love!
