For those of you who need a bit of help with Serena’s article Come Svuotare La Casa, here’s my English translation.

N.B. This is not a literal word for word translation, but rather an interpretation. Being able to interpret, rather than translate word for word is an important skill that will help you become more fluent. For example, you’ll see that in the first paragraph below I’ve interpreted the sentence: “Questo è quello che abbiamo dovuto fare Geoff ed io in questi ultimi giorni” as “That’s what Geoff and I recently had to do” rather than a more literal translation such as “This is that which Geoff and I had to do in these last days.”

Come svuotare in due settimane un appartamento di cinque stanze pieno di mobili, libri e cianfrusaglie? Questo è quello che abbiamo dovuto fare Geoff ed io in questi ultimi giorni.

How do you empty a five room apartment full of furniture, books and knick knacks in two weeks? That’s what Geoff and I recently had to do.

Ai primi di giugno abbiamo spostato mia mamma in una casa famiglia. Il posto è molto bello, fuori in campagna ma a soli cinque minuti da Pontremoli, gli anziani residenti sono solo quattro, e le persone che li curano sono gentilissime.

At the beginning of June we moved my mother into a family home (a small family run hospice). The place is lovely, it’s out in the countryside but only five minutes from Pontremoli, there are just four senior citizens living there, and the people who look after them are really kind hearted.

Fin qui tutto bene. Il problema era che mia mamma stava in un appartamento in affitto, che quindi andava svuotato entro la fine del mese. Da dove cominciare? Per prima cosa abbiamo contattato dei mobilieri e un negozio di modernariato sperando di poter vendere qualcosa. Ma i nostri sogni sono andati subito in fumo e così ci siamo ritrovati con una montagna di roba da eliminare.

So far so good. The problem was that my mother lived in a rented apartment which had to be emptied by the end of the month. Where do you  begin? The first thing we did was contact some furniture dealers and a shop dealing in ‘modern’ antiques in the hope of selling something. But our dreams instantly went up in smoke, so we found ourselves with a mountain of stuff to get rid of.

Io e mio fratello ci siamo divisi qualche cosa, ma ormai abbiamo tutto quello che ci serve in casa. “Possibile che nessuno abbia bisogno di niente?” ci siamo chiesti io e Geoff. Ci siamo ricordati di una famiglia marocchina a cui qualche anno fa avevamo dato un letto. Come sono stati contenti quando gli abbiamo offerto i mobili e le stoviglie della mamma!

My brother and I divided a few things between us, but at this stage we’ve got everything we need at home. “Is it possible that no one needs anything?” Geoff and I asked ourselves. We remembered a Moroccan family that we’d given a bed to a few years ago. How glad they were when we offered them mother’s furniture and dishes!

Felicissimi si sono portati via tutti i mobili della cucina, che erano già stati smontati e riadattati per tre diverse case. Poi hanno preso i vecchi mobili tarlati della camera da letto, l’enorme tavolo da pranzo, il divano, il servizio di piatti da dodici a cui mancavano alcuni pezzi, scaffali in metallo, la macchina da cucire, ecc.

They very happily carried away all the kitchen furniture, which had already been dissembled and readapted for three different houses. Then they took the old woodworm eaten bedroom furniture, the enormous dinner table, the sofa, the twelve piece dinner service which had a few bits missing, metal shelves, the sewing machine, etc.

Quello che avanzava è andato ad un’altra famiglia marocchina. E’ stato appagante dare via tutta questa roba a famiglie bisognose, perché era bello vederli sorpresi e felici davanti ad ogni semplice oggetto. “Posso prendere anche questo?” esclamavano pieni di stupore davanti ad un ferro da stiro, una caffettiera moka, o una teglia per biscotti.

What was left over went to another Moroccan family. It was really fulfilling to give all this stuff away to families in need, and lovely to see their surprise and happiness over each simple object. “Can I take this as well?” they exclaimed in amazement when they found an iron, a moka coffee pot, or a biscuit tray in front of them.

Il lato positivo inoltre era che ci hanno risparmiato tutto il duro lavoro di smontare i mobili e portarli via. Ma malgrado tutta questa beneficenza c’erano ancora mucchi di cose che avanzavano. Vestiti e scarpe li ho messi nei cassonetti degli abiti usati. I libri, le librerie e i CD di musica classica sono andati alla ProLoco, che vuole organizzare piccole biblioteche in ogni bar della città. Una serie di scaffali e un piccolo impianto stereo adesso arredano il centro olistico dove insegno yoga.

The other positive aspect was that they saved us all the hard work of dismantling the furniture and carrying it away. But despite all this charity there were still heaps of things left over. I put the clothes and shoes in the bins for used clothing. The books, book shelves and CD’s of classical music went to the ProLoco, which wants to organise small libraries in each of the town’s bars. A set of shelves and a small stereo now furnish the holistic centre where I teach yoga.

Ciao ciao, credenza! Bye bye Welsh dresser!

Nel frugare fra i cassetti e gli armadi abbiamo ritrovato la vecchia macchina fotografica a soffietto di mia madre, che abbiamo venduto ad un amico appassionato di fotografia, il quale usa ancora le pellicole. Questo amico è un ammiratore di tutto ciò che è vecchio e fatto a mano, e perciò ci ha comprato anche l’enorme credenza che era della mia bisnonna, e vari oggetti che ha usato per decorare la sua nuova yurta (questa è un’altra storia che vi racconterò un’altra volta).

Whilst rummaging through the drawers and wardrobes we rediscovered my mother’s old folding camera, which we sold to a friend who’s really into photography and still uses film. This friend appreciates anything that’s old and hand made, and so he also bought a huge Welsh dresser which belonged to my great grandmother, and various objects which he used to decorate his new yurt (now that’s another story that I’ll tell you about some other time).

Venerdì abbiamo portato gli ultimi mobili giù in strada, perché il comune sarebbe passato il giorno dopo a raccoglierli. Nel giro di poche ore la catasta si è dimezzata! Alle sei di sera, stanchi morti siamo andati al bar a ristorarci, e mentre parlavamo col barista all’improvviso fuori in piazza abbiamo visto passare due marocchini con un tavolino della mamma! L’avevano avuto come ringraziamento per aver aiutato i nostri amici marocchini a trasportare i mobili.

On Friday we carried the last pieces of furniture down into the street as the council would be coming by the next day to collect them. Within a few hours the heap had halved in size! At six that evening, dead tired, we went to the bar to refresh ourselves, and whilst we were talking with the barman, we suddenly saw two Moroccans pass by out in the piazza with one of mother’s small tables! It had been given to them by our Moroccan friends to say thanks for having helped carry the furniture.

E’ strano pensare a tutti questi mobili e oggetti provenienti da tanti posti diversi (Libia, Egitto, Italia, Germania, Inghilterra, Stati Uniti, ecc.), che per decenni sono stati insieme in una casa, e ora si stanno ridistribuendo in giro per la Lunigiana.

It’s strange to think of all these pieces of furniture and object which came from so many different places (Libya, Egypt, Italy, Germany, England, The United States, etc.) that had been together in a house for years, and are now redistributing themselves throughout Lunigiana.
