Well, at least we got to the final! Not bad, considering that the Italian football team, commonly known as Gli Azzurri due to their blue shirts, went to the European Cup without great expectations, and finished in second place. In this video Cesare Prandelli, the coach of the Nazionale Italiana di Calcio (Italian National Football Team), comments on Italy’s performance in the European Cup. After winning the world Cup in 2006 Italy went through a very difficult time, culminating in its disastrous performance in the 2010 World Cup. However, in this year’s European Football Championship gli Azzurri managed to fare sognare l’Italia (make Italy dream), as Cesare Prandelli puts it at the end of the press conference which he gave the day after the dramatic final against Spain. Here is my transcription of Prandelli’s speech with an English interpretation:

Con tutta onestà, siamo in un Paese vecchio: abbiamo idee vecchie, abbiamo modalità vecchie, abbiamo veramente tante cose che avremmo, che dovremmo avere il coraggio di dire: “OK, cambiamo!”. Noi abbiamo avuto il coraggio di venire agli Europei e di dire: “Vogliamo cambiare”. Chiaro che poi c’è il risultato, però non deve essere condizionante per un’idea.

In all honesty, we are in an old Country: we have old ideas, we have old ways, we really have many things that we would have, that we should have had the courage to say: “OK, let’s change”!”. We had the courage to come to the European Cup and to say: “We want to change”. Certainly there’s the end result, however it shouldn’t affect the original idea.

Possiamo essere orgogliosi di quest’Italia, possiamo essere veramente … eh… soddisfatti, perché abbiamo proposto una squadra che ha voluto fare un calcio propositivo, abbiamo proposto una squadra corretta, abbiamo proposto una squadra che è andata oltre l’aspetto sportivo.

We can be proud of this Italy, we can be really …eh… satisfied, because we have presented a team that wanted to play a proactive football, we have presented a team which plays correctly, we have presented a team which has gone beyond the sport aspect.

La vittoria avrebbe fatto bene a tutti, ma probabilmente avrebbe anche fatto perdere l’equilibrio a tanti. Secondo me ci vuole tempo per arrivare ad avere una continuità. Eh… Quello che voglio far capire è che c’è la voglia di cambiamento, c’è la voglia di rinnovo. Se noi vogliamo veramente cambiare, rinnovare, lo dobbiamo fare per lungo tempo. Non dobbiamo vivere solo attraverso un risultato. Certo, sarebbe stata una cosa straordinaria, ma forse non siamo ancora pronti, forse non siamo ancora pronti! e nel momento che saremo pronti a vincere, saremo pronti a rivincere, saremo pronti per continuare a vincere, quindi per anni e anni avremo una continuità.

Victory would have done everybody good, but probably it would also have made many lose their balance. I believe that it takes time to manage to have continuity. Eh… What I want people to understand is that there is the desire for change, there is the desire for renewal. If we want to really change, renew, we have to do it in the long term. We mustn’t just live through a single result. Of course, it would have been an extraordinary thing, but maybe we are not ready yet, maybe we are not ready yet! and in the moment when are ready to win, we will be ready to win again, we will be ready to carry on winning, then we’ll have continuity for years and years.

Eh… L’unico rammarico, ma proprio l’unico, è di non aver affrontato questa squadra con due giorni di riposo in più, perché avremmo sicuramente fatto un’altra partita, ma è l’unico, piccolo, rammarico.

Eh… the only regret, really the only one, is not having faced this team (Spain) with two more days of rest, because we would have certainly played a different match, but that’s the only, little, regret.

… ma abbiamo cercato di costruire una squadra di nazionale per la prima volta come una mentalità di club.  Questo dobbiamo fare!

… but we tried for the first time to build a national team with a club mentality. This is what we must do!

Questa nostra passione, questa nostra voglia è stata contagiosa: abbiamo regalato un sogno! Questa squadra è partita senza grandi aspettative, e ha fatto sognare l’Italia! Questa è una cosa straordinaria!

This passion of ours, this desire of ours was contagious: we gave a dream! This team set off without great expectations, and made Italy dream! This is an extraordinary thing!
