Il Periodo Ipotetico – An Exercise Posted by on Sep 15, 2017 in Grammar

Here’s an exercise based on last week’s article il Periodo Ipotetico (conditional sentences). Fill in the gaps in the Italian sentences below. The answers are hidden at the bottom of the page.

Buon Lavoro!

if I’d brought my camera I’d take some photos se ___ ___ la macchina fotografica ___ delle foto. Photo by Geoff

1. Periodo Ipotetico della Realtà

N.B. The periodo ipotetico della realtà presents situations which are real or possible. For this reason we use il modo indicativo (used to make factual statements, ask questions, or express opinions as if they were facts). Sometimes we use l’imperativo (the imperative) in the clause describing the consequence.

if Giorgio phones, can you tell him that I’m going to be late? (you singular formal)

if I need any help, I’ll let you know

if I go shopping this afternoon, I’ll buy some milk

if we’re late tonight, don’t worry! (you singular)
se ___ tardi stasera, non __ ____ ! (fare/preoccuparsi)

2. Periodo Ipotetico della Possibilità

N.B. The periodo ipotetico della possibilità presents situations which are unlikely or unreal at present. For this reason we use il congiuntivo imperfetto (the imperfect subjunctive) in the hypothetical clause, and il condizionale presente (the present conditional) to express the possible outcome.

what would you do if you won the lottery? (you singular)
che cosa ____ se ____ la lotteria? (fare/vincere)

if we caught the 9:30 train to Milan, we’d arrive there for lunchtime

if it weren’t raining we could have lunch in the garden
se non ____, ____ pranzare in giardino (piovere/pranzare)

3. Periodo Ipotetico della Irrealtà

N.B. The periodo ipotetico della irrealtà presents situations in the past which are contrary to what actually happened. For this reason we use il congiuntivo trapassato (the pluperfect subjunctive) in the hypothetical clause, and il condizionale passato (the past conditional) to express the hypothetical outcome.

if I’d had more time, I would have made potato gnocchi
se ___ ____ più, tempo ___ ___ gli gnocchi di patate (avere/fare)

if you had told us that your car has broken down, we would have given you a lift (you singular)

if Mario had trained more, he would have won the competition
se Mario __ ___ ____ di più, ___ ___ la gara (allenarsi/vincere)

4. Periodo Ipotetico Misto

N.B. We also have a form that mixes il periodo ipotetico della irrealtà with il periodo ipotetico della possibilità when the hypothetical situation is in the past, but the result carries on into the present.

if you’d had your breakfast, you wouldn’t be hungry now (you singular)
se tu ___ ____ colazione, ora non ____ fame (fare/avere)

if I’d brought my camera I’d take some photos

  1. paolo:

    Ciao Serena/ Geoff,

Buon esercizio. Grazie. Ne ho sbagliato quattro. Inaccettabile.

    (ho trovato un errore)
“if we’re late tonight, don’t worry! (you singular)
se (faccio) tardi stasera, non ti preoccupare!

    Buon fine settimana

    • Serena:

      @paolo Ciao Paolo,

        • Serena:

@paolo Succede, non ti preoccupare! 🙂
          Saluti da Serena

  2. Don:

I got all the ones in sections 2, 3 & 4 correct, but a couple of tense differences in Section 1.

    I had for (1b):
se ho bisogno d’aiuto, te lo farò sapere (not faccio).
    and for (1d):

    Are those actually wrong, please?

    • Serena:

      @Don Salve Don, bravo!
In 1b is best to use the present tense, because in Italian we don’t mix the tenses. While in English you say: If I need any help I’ll let you know (present + future), in Italian we say either: se ho bisogno d’aiuto te lo faccio sapere (presente + presente), or: se avrò bisogno d’aiuto te lo farò sapere (future + future).

In 1d the use of the futuro anteriore is grammatically correct but changes the meaning of the sentence.

With the passato prossimo (se Mario non è riuscito a prendere il treno delle 7.00, arriverà con quello delle 9) we are talking about the present: Mario should already be on the 7:00 o’clock train. If not, he will arrive with the following train.

With the futuro anteriore (se Mario non sarà riuscito a prendere il treno delle 7.00) we are talking about the future, i.e. se domani Mario non sarà riuscito a prendere il treno delle 7.00, arriverà con quello delle 9.

      Spero di essere stata chiara.

      Saluti da Serena

  3. Chris:

A few wrong. I went for “se non stesse piovendo, potremmo pranzare in giardino” which I think would be OK?

    • Serena:

      @Chris Salve Chris!

  4. Joanna:

I had the pleasure of meeting an Italian lady, recently, here in Lancashire. She was SO impressed when I said “Se vincessi la lotteria comprerei una casa in Sicilia!”
    Grazie mille!!

    • Serena:

Complimenti Joanna!
