I must say that I really enjoyed reading the responses to my recent post Conversational Fragments. I love the fact that we have such imaginative readers, and I also find the responses very useful for gauging people’s comprehension of the colloquial expressions that I tend to use in my articles.

One such expression that really stood out as being in need of further explanation is non è detto. Here are a few examples that highlight how it should be used:

Michela: oddio, ho messo la torta in forno dieci minuti fa e adesso non c’è più gas … si rovinerà!
Giovanna: non, non è detto, se cambiamo subito la bombola e alziamo appena la temperatura vedrai che andrà tutto bene.

Michaela: oh god, I put the cake in the oven ten minutes ago and now the gas has run out … it’ll be ruined!
Giovanna: no, not necessarily, if we change the gas bottle straight away and raise the temperature a bit it’ll turn out fine, you’ll see.

“La torta è pronta, signora”

Omar: mi hanno detto che per domani hanno messo brutto tempo, mi sa che non giochiamo!
Geoff: ma non è detto, se riusciamo ad utilizzare la vecchia palestra possiamo fare almeno un paio di partite, no?

Omar: I’ve heard that the weather’s going to be bad tomorrow, I don’t think we’ll be playing!
Geoff: well not necessarily, if we manage to use the old gym we can at least have a couple of matches, can’t we?

Serena: sì che ho lasciato fuori il bucato, ma anche se qua piove, non è detto che piova da noi, vero?
Geoff: sì amore mio, hai ragione ……. come sempre …….

Serena: yes, I left the washing out, but just because it’s raining here that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s raining at home, does it?
Geoff: yes love, you’re right ……. as usual …….

Damiano: e cosa ti ha detto lui?
Thomas: ha detto che la vernice non ti basta perché quel barattolo è troppo piccolo
Damiano: ma non è detto, l’ultima volta che ho comprato un barattolo di quella misura mi è bastato

Damiano: so what did he say?
Thomas: he said that the paint won’t be enough because the tin is too small
Damiano: well not necessarily, I had enough last time that I bought a tin that size

Allora cari lettori, lo so che solo perché vi ho spiegato come usare l’espressione non è detto, non è detto che abbiate capito tutto il vocabolario in questo articolo. Ditemi voi se c’è qualcosa che non avete capito, okay?
