Ho cercato dappertutto, ma non li trovo! I’ve looked everywhere, but I can’t find them!
Here’s a list of all the places I’ve looked highlighting the words that describe position:
Ho cercato …
dentro tutti i cassetti = in all the drawers
sotto il divano = under the sofa/couch
sopra l’armadio = on top of the wardrobe
dietro la poltrona = behind the armchair
“Serena, hai visto i miei occhiali?” (Serena, have you seen my glasses?)
“sì amore” (yes love)
“allora, dove sono?” (so, where are they?)
“ce li hai sulla testa caro” (you have them on your head dear)
“oddio come sono scemo!” (oh god, I’m so stupid!)
Words that describe position are indispensible in everyday conversation, and if you want to make yourself understood it’s important that you take control of them. Let’s look at a few more:
davanti al computer = in front of the computer
a sinistra della casa = to the left of the house
a destra dell’albero = to the right of the tree
sulla mensola = on the shelf
vicino all’ufficio = close to the office
accanto al negozio = next to the shop
lontano da casa nostra = far away from our house
fuori in giardino = out in the garden (fuori come un balcone = ‘out like a balcony’ is a colloquial expression meaning ‘to be completely crazy’)
|
What do you mean keep calm … I’m completely crazy |
oltre il confine = beyond the border
attorno/intorno al parco = around the park
di fronte alla stazione = opposite the station
al di là di Roma = beyond Rome
al di fuori della città = outside the city
al di sopra del paese = up above the village
fin in fondo al corridoio = at the end of the corridor
dietro l’angolo = round the corner
Then we have qui and qua = here
eccolo qua! = here it is!
lì and là = there
la macchina è lì = the car is there
quassù = up here
fa freddo quassù = it’s cold up here
quaggiù = down here
fa buio quaggiù = it’s dark down here
lassù = up there
c’è ancora luce lassù = it’s still light up there
|
Someone Up There Is Crazy, is the Italian title of a film called The Gods Must Be Crazy 2. I haven’t seen it, but the first film in the series was a gem. |
laggiù = down there
vedi quell’edificio laggiù? = can you see that building down there?
dappertutto = everywhere
in Italia i bar si possono trovare dappertutto = in Italy you can find bars everywhere
altrove = elsewhere/somewhere else
deve essere altrove = it must be somewhere else
As always, if anything is unclear please leave a comment … now, where did I leave my other pair of glasses?

L’unica cosa che posso dire è sono contento che non sono io non l’unico persona che fa questa.
Eduardo:
Thank you very much. In my opinion, these words that describe position, must be seen again and again, in order to fix them.
Anthony:
