Here we are at the beginning of a new year, and isn’t it funny how saying something like “I haven’t seen my friend Fabio since last year” makes it seem like a distant event, when in reality I saw him less than a week ago? Past, present and future, now seems like a good time to take a look at some of the expressions that we use in Italian when discussing each of these three periods of time.

Passato = Past:

l’anno scorso abbiamo scritto 142 articoli per il blog = last year we wrote 142 articles for the blog

lo scorso giugno siamo andati a Ravenna = last June we went to Ravenna

l’estate passata volevamo andare in Sicilia, ma non ce l’abbiamo fatta = last summer we wanted to go to Sicily, but we didn’t manage

ad ottobre abbiamo finalmente conosciuto Bill e Victoria = in October we finally met Bill and Victoria

due settimane fa ho incontrato un’amica che non vedevo da tanto tempo = two weeks ago I met a friend whom I hadn’t seen for a long time

l’altro giorno siamo stati a pranzo da Maddalena e Fabio = the other day we had lunch at Maddalena and Fabio’s

questa notte sono stata svegliata da Gigia la gatta = last night I was woken up by Gigia the cat

Presente = Present:

oggi è una bella giornata di sole = today is a beautiful sunny day

in questo momento sto scrivendo un articolo per il blog = at the moment I’m writing an article for the blog

attualmente Geoff è impegnato a scopare il pavimento = at the moment Geoff is busy brushing the floor

ora non ho tempo di chiacchierare al telefono perché sto cucinando = I don’t have time to chat on the telephone now because I’m cooking

in questo periodo di solito fa molto freddo = usually it’s very cold during this period

adesso vado al supermercato = I’m going to the supermarket now

ormai è troppo tardi per telefonargli = it’s too late to phone him now

Futuro = Future:

oggi pomeriggio vado alla posta a pagare la tassa dell’immondizia = this afternoon I’m going to the post office to pay the rubbish collection tax

domani è l’Epifania, che tutte le feste porta via = tomorrow will be the Epiphany, the end of all the (Christmas/New Year’s) holidays

fra qualche giorno andremo a trovare zio Luciano a La Spezia = in a few days we are going to visit uncle Luciano in La Spezia

quest’altro sabato voglio andare al mercato = next Saturday I want to go to the market

a febbraio ho una visita dal dentista = in February I have an appointment with the dentist

la prossima primavera faremo un viaggio in Sicilia = next spring we’ll take a trip to Sicily

NOTES

Past: we can say either lo scorso anno, l’anno scorso or l’anno passato, all three are interchangeable. N.B. the endings of scorso/scorsa and passato/passata change gender accordingly. e.g.: la scorsa settimana (fem.), lo scorso autunno (masc.). 

Present: attualmente is one of our so called ‘false friends’ in that it sounds like it should mean actually whereas it (actually) means at present/right now.

Future: quest’altro (literally: this other) is a commonly used version of il prossimo/la prossima
