In my last blog Quanto Tempo I explained the use of two important expressions that we use when we talk about how long things take. Today, I’m going to continue with the ‘time’ theme by looking at possible replies to the question quanto spesso? – how often?

spesso – often: vado spesso a Bergamo per lavoro – I often go to Bergamo for my job, or non faccio le lasagne in casa molto spesso – I don’t make lasagne at home very often

frequentemente – frequently: vado frequentemente a Bergamo per lavoro – I frequently go to Bergamo for my job

raramente – rarely/seldom: faccio le lasagne in casa raramente – I rarely make lasagne at home

volta – time: una volta al giorno – once a day, due volte all’anno – twice a year, tre volte al mese – three times a month, etc.

a volte/delle volte – sometimes: a volte la macchina non parte – sometimes the car won’t start, or delle volte non riesco a svegliarmi la mattina – sometimes I can’t manage to wake up in the morning

ogni – every: ogni giorno pratico lo yoga – I practice yoga every day, or il treno per Firenze parte ogni quaranta minuti – the trains to Firenze leave every forty minutes. (N.B. we also use the expression tutti i giorni as an alternative to ogni giorno, e.g.: annaffio l’orto tutti i giorni – I water the vegetable patch every day)

ogni tanto – now and again, or una volta ogni tanto – every once in a while: ogni tanto facciamo un salto al mare – now and again we pop down to the sea, or una volta ogni tanto andiamo a Sarzana a trovare mia cugina – every once in a while we go to Sarzana to see my cousin

saltuariamente – from time to time, or occasionalmente – occasionally: saltuariamente mi concedo una fetta di torta al cioccolato – from time to time I allow myself a slice of chocolate cake

regolarmente – regularly: vado in piscina regolarmente – I go to the swimming pool regularly

un _ sì e uno no – every other: durante la settimana pubblico un blog un giorno sì uno no – during the week I publish a blog every other day, or lavoriamo al Bed & Breakfast un finesettimana sì uno no – we work at the Bed & Breakfast every other week end

tutto il tempo – all the time: questa è una cosa che succede tutto il tempo – this is something that happens all the time

in continuazione – continually: il prezzo della benzina aumenta in continuazione – the price of petrol goes up continually

mai – never: il prezzo della benzina non scende mai – the price of petrol never goes down

giornalmente/quotidianamente – daily/on a daily basis: Deve fare questo esercizio quotidianamente – You have to do this exercise on a daily basis

settimanalmente – weekly/on a weekly basis: vado in piscina settimanalmente – I go to the swimming pool on a weekly basis

mensilmente – monthly: la rivista ‘Focus’ è pubblicata mensilmente – the magazine ‘Focus’ is published monthly

annualmente – yearly: annualmente a San Remo si tiene il festival della canzone italiana – the festival of the Italian song is held in San Remo yearly

ogni morte di Papa – every once in a blue moon: lavo la macchina ogni morte di Papa – I wash the car every once in a blue moon
