after the party they realised that they’d forgotten where the car was parked
dopo la festa si sono resi conto di essersi dimenticati dov’era parcheggiata la macchina

Trapassato Prossimo:

I had become aware that something was wrong
mi ero accorto/a che qualcosa non andava

they had noticed that the door had been left ajar
si erano accorti che la porta era stata lasciata accostata

Congiuntivo:
