Using The Passato Prossimo – An Exercise Posted by on Jun 13, 2018 in Grammar

In my article Using The Passato Prossimo In Italian – Part 1 we looked at the basic rules for constructing the passato prossimo (present perfect). Here’s an exercise that will help you gauge your abilities.

Fill in the gaps in the Italian sentences below.

1. A Trip to Rome

Marco:
Giovanni went to Rome last week
Giovanni _______ a Roma la settimana scorsa

Laura:
Oh yes? And what did he do there?
Ah sì? E cosa _______ lì?

Marco:
He had a business meeting, but in his free time he visited a few museum
_______ una riunione di lavoro, ma nel suo tempo libero _______ qualche museo

Laura:
Nice, I’ve never been to Rome … perhaps one day you’ll take me there!
Che bello, non __ mai _______ a Roma, forse un giorno mi ci porterai!

Marco:
Hmm, perhaps one day … have you fed the cats?
Hm, forse un giorno … _______ da mangiare ai gatti?

2. Cousin Franco

Luca:
My daughters have gone to see their cousin Franco in Parma
Le mie figlie _______ a trovare il loro cugino Franco a Parma

Paolo:
Franco … isn’t he the one who had problems with drugs?
Franco … non è lui che _______ problemi con la droga?

Luca:
Yes, after his father died he had some problems
Sì, dopo che _______ suo padre _______ qualche problema

Paolo:
So what happened to him?
Quindi, cosa gli _______?

Luca:
He spent six months in a rehab centre
_______ sei mesi in un centro di recupero

Paolo:
And how did it go, is he better now? (hint: in Italian, when we ask ‘how did it go?’ we use the feminine conjugation for the past participle)
E come _______, ora sta meglio?

Luca:
Yes, much better, he’s even found a job
Sì, molto meglio, __ persino _______ lavoro

3. The Moth

Nicolò:
Mum, look what I found!
Mamma, guarda cosa _______!

Mamma:
Wow, I’ve never seen such an enormous moth in my life!
Caspita, non __ mai _______ una falena così enorme in vita mia!

Nicolò:
I found it near the old barn
L’_______ vicino al vecchio fienile

Mamma:
Have you shown it to your sister
L’_______ vedere a tua sorella

Nicolò:
Yes, she said it’s beautiful
Sì, _______ che è bella

Mamma:
It really is beautiful!
E’ bella davvero!

4. A Very Hot Day

When it got very hot: the children put their hands in the fountain and washed their faces with the cold water
Quando _______ molto caldo: i bimbi _______ le mani nella fontana e _______ la faccia con l’acqua fredda

… the old man fell asleep under the olive tree
… il vecchio _______ sotto l’ulivo

… the donkey went into his stable
… l’asino _______ nella stalla

… the birds stopped singing
… gli uccelli _______ di cantare

… the cicadas began to screech
… le cicale _______ a frinire

… the young girl fanned herself with a magazine

Marco:
He had a business meeting, but in his free time he visited a few museum
Ha avuto una riunione di lavoro, ma nel suo tempo libero ha visitato qualche museo

Laura:
Nice, I’ve never been to Rome … perhaps one day you’ll take me there!
Che bello, non sono mai stata a Roma, forse un giorno mi ci porterai!

Marco:
Hmm, perhaps one day … have you fed the cats?
Hm, forse un giorno … hai dato da mangiare ai gatti?

Luca:

Le mie figlie sono andate a trovare il loro cugino Franco a Parma

Paolo:

    Grazie per questo esercizio. È stato molto utile. Mi sono sbagliata con la parola “smettere” che ho trattata da verbo riflessivo.

    Grazie Geoff per un altro articolo molto utile.
    Ho tradotto ‘he spent time’ come ha trascorso, che ritengo sia anche corretto ma è stato utile vedere spendere usato perché l’ho usato solo con i soldi.
    Inoltre non potevo pensare al verbo ‘to fan oneself’
    Al momento sono a San Gimignano prima di passare due settimane vicino al Lago Trasimeno, quindi tante opportunità per praticare il mio italiano.
