As we all know, there are many transition words in English that we use on a daily basis.  We also have many of those in Japanese. Transition words are called “Setsuzokushi(せつぞくし、接続詞)” in Japanese. Transition words are good to know as you have conversation with your partner. In order for you to keep the conversation flowing, transition words are must know. In today’s lesson, I would like to show you some of the most commonly used ones below.

 

 

 

And 　そして　(Soshite)

Kyo kouen ni itte soshite soccer- o shimashita.

きょう、こうえん　に　いって　そして　サッカーを　しました。

（今日、公園に　行って　そして　サッカーを　しました。）

I went to the park today and played soccer.

As well as 　～も　(~mo)

Watashiwa soccer ga suki desu. Swimming mo sukidesu.

わたしは、サッカーがすきです。　スイミング　も　すきです。

（私は、サッカーが　好きです。　スイミング　も　好きです。）

I like playing soccer as well as swimming.

But 　しかし　(Shikashi)

Kyou no ensoku o tanoshimini shiteita. Shikashi amede enkini natta.

きょうの　えんそくを　たのしみにしていた。しかし、あめで　えんきになった。

（今日の　遠足を　楽しみにしていた。しかし　雨で　延期に　なった。）

I was looking forward to today’s field trip, but it was postponed due to rain.

So, Therefore　だから　(Dakara)

Imouto ga naiteita. Dakara ame wo ageta.

いもうとが　ないていた。　だから　あめを　あげた。

（妹が　泣いていた。だから　飴を　あげた。）

My little sister was crying.  So, I gave her a candy.

Or  それとも　(Soretomo)

Ringo ga tabetai? Soretomo mikan?

りんごが　たべたい？それとも、　みかん？

（リンゴが　食べたい？それとも　みかん？）

Would you like an apple? Or, orange?

In other words,   つまり　(Tsumari)

Saikin gakko dewa Halloween Party, Farewell Party, to tsuzuita. Tsumari, event tsuzuki datta.

さいきん　がっこうでは、ハロウィンパーティー、おわかれパーティー、とつづいた、つまり、イベント　つづきだった。

（最近、学校では、パロウィンパーティー、お別れパーティーと続いた。つまり、イベント続きだった。）

Lately, we had Halloween party and Farewell Party, etc at school. In other words, we had many events.

Because   なぜなら　(Nazenara)

Kyou wa kaisha ni ikimasen deshita. Nazenara netsu ga atta kara desu.

きょうは　かいしゃに　いきませんでした。　なぜなら、ねつが　あったからです。

（今日は、会社に　行きませんでした。なぜなら　熱があったからです。）

I did not go to work today. Because I had a fever.
