It is getting warmer here in the Northwest these days. I love it how we are having more and more sunny days recently. Spring is almost here. In this article, I would like to introduce you to some of the common Japanese words that are used for Spring.

Kanji Hiragana pronunciation English Translation
はる haru spring
さくら sakura cherry blossom
暖かい あたたかい atatakai warm
うめ ume plum
水仙 すいせん suisen daffodil
シロツメクサ shirotsumekusa white clover
たんぽぽ tanpopo dandelion
菜の花 なのはな nanohana
Rapeseed
昆虫 こんちゅう konchu insects
テントウムシ tentou mushi ladybug
あり ari ants
はち hachi bees
モンシロチョウ monshiro chou small white butterfly
アゲハチョウ ageha chou Swallowtail butterfly

 

These are some of the expressions we often use during Spring season.

  • 天気がいい-tenki ga ii. (Weather is nice).
  • いい天気-ii tenki. (Nice weather).
  • 外は気持ちがいい。- sotowa kimochiga ii. (It feels good to be outside).
  • お花がきれいです。-ohana ga kirei desu. (Flowers look beautiful).
  • お花がきれいに咲いています。-ohana ga kireini saite imasu. (Flowers are blooming beautifully).
  • 散歩にいきましょう。-sanpo ni ikimashou. (Let’s go for a walk!).
  • ピクニックに行きましょう。-Picnic ni ikima shou. (Let’s go for picnic!).
  • 公園で昼寝がしたいです。-kouen de hirune ga shitai desu. (I want to take a nap at the park).
  • 公園で子供達が遊んでいます。-kouen de kodomo tachi ga asonde imasu. (Kids are playing at the park).
  • 今日は、とても気分がいいです。-kyou wa totemo kibun ga iidesu. (I feel wonderful today)

 

Since we are talking about Spring, let me introduce you to some of the Kanji’s that are related to “Nature”.

山(やま、さん) – (yama, or san) ~ Mountain

  1. 高い山(たかいやま)-(tall mountain)
  2. 富士山(ふじさん)- Mr. Fuji.

川(かわ) – (kawa) ~ River

  1. 川で遊ぶ。(かわであそぶ)-(to play in the river)

空(そら) – (sora) ~ Sky

  1. 空を見てごらん。-(そらをみてごらん。)-(Look at the sky.)

雨(あめ) – (ame) ~ Rain

  1. 雨が降っています。-(あめがふっています。)-(It is raining.)
  2. 雨は嫌いです。-(あめはきらいです。)-(I don’t like rain.)

風(かぜ) – (kaze) ~ Wind

  1. 外は風が強い。-(そとは、かぜがつよい。)-(It is windy outside.)

雪(ゆき) – (yuki) ~ Snow

  1. 雪が降っています。-(ゆきがふっています。)-(It is snowing.)
