Hwaseong Fortress Posted by on Nov 4, 2010 in Uncategorized

Hwaseong (화성) Fortress is a large mausoleum built by King Jeongjo (정조) for his father Prince Sado (사도). Prince Sado tragically died in a rice chest after he was politically framed by the nobles of the court. His son, King Jeongjo, built Hwaseong Fortress as a way of restoring honor to his father (Prince Sado) and exonerating his good name. Hwaseong Fortress is located in Gyeonggi Province (경기도).

The Beacon Tower (봉돈) was where guards used a system of smoke signals and torch lights to warn the sight of an advancing enemy.

The Northeast Crossbow Platform (동북노대) was where archers shot their bow and arrows at the enemy below (pictured below).

The Secret Eastern Gate (동암문) was a secret passageway hidden from enemy view. It was where horses, mules, soldiers and munitions were led into the fortress.
