Korean Festivals in May Posted by on May 4, 2011 in Culture

The month of May is a merry time for festivals in South Korea. Have you been to the Yeoncheon Jeongokri Paleolithic Festival (연천전곡리 구석기축제)? I love this festival because you can learn about how Paleolithic people lived, through live demonstrations. The festival will start on May 4th and end on May 8th. It will take place in Yeoncheon County (연천군) in Gyeonggi Province (경기도). I always have a smile on my face because where else will you find adults dressed in animal skins with messy hair?

Damyang Bamboo Festival (담양대나무축제) is a festival highlighting all the useful purposes that bamboo can be used for. It will last from May 3rd to May 8th in Damyang County (담양군), which is in Jeollanam Province (전남도). This festival features a bamboo toy making station, a bamboo ink painting station, and a bamboo fishing station. My personal favorite, though, is the bamboo water-rafting ride, where the whole family can ride a bamboo raft in open waters.

The Lotus Lantern Festival (연등축제) will take place from May 5th to May 8th in the city of Seoul (서울). The main attraction of this festival is the lantern parade. The lantern parade features large floats, with dancers and people dressed in traditional Korean clothing. Other activities will include a fun lantern-making event, where people can make their own paper lanterns. During the Lantern Festival, the streets of Seoul are lighted with lanterns of all colors, shapes and sizes. It’s all very beautiful!
