Simple sentences in Pashto:  The verb normally comes at the end of the sentence in Pashto.  Translations:  This – Da, that -haghah, it –Da or haghah, she-haghah, he-haghah and is –Dai.

English Transliterated Pashto
 This is a book  Dā  Ketāb dai  دا کتاب دی                                  
 That is a pen  haghah  qalam dai  هغه قلم دی                                  
 This is a house  da kur dai  دا کور دی                                   
 That is a village  Haghah kelai dai  هغه کلی دی                                 
 It is a desk  da maez dai  دا میز دی                                   
 It is a chair (fem)  haghah chowkai  dah(fem)  هغه چوکی ده                                
 This is a man  da saRai dai  دا سړی دی                                  
 That is a women (fem)  Haghah khezah dah (fem)  هغه ښځه ده                                 
 Habib is a carpenter  Habib tarkāN dai  حبیب ترکاڼ دی                              
 Habiba is a nurse (fem)  Habiba parastārah dah (fem)  حبیبه پرستاره ده                            
 Wali  is a teacher  Wali  ma ‘lem dai  ولی معلم دی                                
 She is a student (fem)  Haghah zdah kunkay dah (fem)  هغه زده کونکي ده                          

 

Exercise:  make sentences out of the following vocabulary using the above word order.

 Broom/jārru/جارو  Shoe/bowT/ بوټ  Shirt/kam īs/کمیس
 School/maktab/ مکتب  Shop/dukān/دوکان  Wall/dewāl/ دیوال
 Teacher/ma ‘lem/معلم  Girl/njalai /نجلۍ  Key/kunj ī/  کونجی
 Door/darwāzah/دروازه  Boy/halak/هلک  Black/tur/تور
 Clock/sā ‘t/ ساعت  Blue/ābee/آبی  Dog/spai/سپی
 He/haghah/ هغه  She/haghah/هغه  It/da/دا
