Sierpień takes it’s name from “sierp” – sickle, which was always used for mowing grains.

In Poland August’s weather is usually beautiful and warm with a lot of flowers and fruits on the trees. Here are some common Polish sayings about Sierpień:

Z sierpem w ręku witać sierpień, wiele uciech, wiele cierpień.

Greet August with a sickle in your hand, a lot of pleasure, a lot of suffering.

Jaki pierwszy, drugi, trzeci, taki cały sierpień leci.

The entire month of August will be like the first, second and third of the month.

Ostatni sierpnia zapowiada, jaka pogoda na październik wypada.

Last of August announces the weather in October.

Gdy na początku sierpnia skwar trzyma, to nieostra bywa zima.

When early August is hot, then winter is usually not too cold.

Gdy w dni sierpnia spieka wszędzie, tedy długa zima będzie.

When the entire month of August is hot, then winter will be long.

Gdy z początku sierpień częste grzmoty miewa, tedy też do końca takąż nutę śpiewa.

When the beginning of August has frequent thunders, then “it sings the same song” to the end.

Początki sierpnia pogodne, wróżą zimy łagodne.

August serene beginnings, bode mild winters.

Kiedy sierpień wrzos rozwija, jesień krótka, szybko mija.

When August heather growing, autumn short, quick passes.

Gdy w sierpniu z północy dmucha, nastaje zwykle posucha.

When in August from the north blows, usually comes the drought.

Kiedy sierpień przychodzi, reszta zboża z pola schodzi.

When August comes, the rest of the grain from the field goes down.

W sierpniu grzmotów wiele, mokrą zimę ściele.

When there are a lot of thunders in August, the winter will be wet.

W pierwszym tygodniu pogoda stała, będzie zima długa, biała.

In the first week, weather stable, winter will be white and long.

Jak po lipcu sierpień się ochłodzi, to później zima twarda z wielkim śniegiem chodzi.

When after July August is cool, then winter comes with a big snow.

Jeśli w sierpniu dni jasne, będą stodoły ciasne.

If a clear day in August, the barn will be tight.
