New Year’s in Kraków Posted by on Dec 26, 2011 in Culture, Places to visit

If you are in  Kraków you are probably planning to visit Market Square during New Year’s night. For many years, Kraków’s Main Market Square has lent its beauty as the backdrop to one of Europe’s largest New Year’s communal celebrations. It usually gathers around 100,000 people: visitors from Poland and abroad coming to Kraków especially for that moment to welcome the coming of the new year.

The authorities of the City of Kraków have made the decision to change the format of this year’s New Year’s Eve on the Main Market Square. There will be no stage or performances by invited stars. But there will still be a fireworks display for the inhabitants of the City of Kraków.

At 11:45 pm on New Year’s Eve, the crowds gathered in the Main Market Square (from the side of the Adam Mickiewicz Monument) will be greeted with a several-minute long musical set (dance music). Traditionally, the firework display then begins at midnight. A fireworks show consisting of spectacular bombs, comets, launchers and mingling crowns will arouse many emotions among those  gathered, and will involve the use of 200 kg of firework material. Everything will be complemented by a special musical background, orchestrated with the visual part. Additionally, the facade of the Cloth Hall will be used as a screen for projections with New Year’s wishes for the inhabitants of Kraków.

I wanted to make sure that they can communicate with their Polish relatives in our native language. Teaching them Polish since they were born was the best thing I could have given them! I have been writing about learning Polish language and culture for Transparent Language’s Polish Blog since 2010.
