Hello there!

Let’s continue with the second part of the idioms with verb “make” that are translatable into Portuguese! Click here to check Part 01.

06. Make believe – fazer de conta, fingir

Todas as crianças adoram fazer de conta que são super-heróis.
All young children love to make believe that they are superheroes.

Não podemos simplesmente fingir que está tudo certo quando não está.
We can’t just make believe everything is all right when it isn’t.

07. Make it clear – deixar claro

“Pensei que tinha deixado claro que não toleraria cola!”, disse o sr. Rinaldo ao Rodrigo quando o pegou colando.
“I thought I’d made it clear that I would not put up with cheating!”, Mr. Rinaldo told Rodrigo when he caught him cheating.

O político deixou claro à imprensa que ele não pretendia concorrer a outro mandato.
The politician made it clear to the press that he didn’t intend to run for another term.

08. Make do – usar o que há disponível, virar-se com o que tem, quebrar o galho

Não tenho um grampeador aqui. Dá pra quebrar o galho com durex?
I don’t have a stapler here. Can you make do with some scotch tape?

Acabou o açúcar. Você se vira com um adoçante?
We’re run out of sugar. Can you make do with a sweetener?

09. Make ends meet – ser capaz de pagar as contas com o que se ganha

Tanto o Ricardo quando a Cláudia trabalham, mas ainda assim é difícil para eles pagarem as contas.
Both Ricardo and Cláudia have jobs, but it’s still difficult do make ends meet.

Não sei como ele consegue pagar as contas com um salário tão baixo!
I wonder how he manages to make ends meet on such a low salary!

10. Make sure – verificar; checar; certificar-se de algo; não deixar de fazer algo

Não deixe de apagar as luzes antes de ir se deitar.
Make sure you turn off the lights before you go to bed.

Só liguei pra verificar que você estava bem.
I just called to make sure you were all right.
