Brazil and MMA Posted by on Apr 21, 2010 in Culture, Sports

Martial arts are very popular nowadays and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is spreading worldwide since it started about 20 years ago.

What does that have to do with Brazil though? Here is it: Brazilian fighters are among the best fighters in the whole world.

Names like Anderson “The spider” Silva, Maurício “Shogun” Ruas, Lyoto “The dragon” Machida, Wanderley Silva and Rodrigo Nogueira “Minotauro” are worth the respect of every fighter. Most Brazilian fighters master their skills in some kind of “stand” style like Karate or Muay Thai and, along with it, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

In the video below you’ll get to see the training of one of the best Brazilian fighters: Minotauro.

You may also want to check Anderson Silva’s interview about MMA in Brazil and his fight against Demian Maia. As you listen try to identify words and expressions you already know.

I’m a big fan of MMA myself. I even practice Muay Thai and I’m thinking of taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes. Who’s with me?
