Since we’ve been discussing expats and poetry this week, I thought we could take a look at another poem, one of the most beautiful in Brazilian literature. Thanks for the suggestion from one of our users, who posted the poem on the Portuguese Blog Facebook page.

“Exile Song” is one of Brazil’s most famous poems, written by Gonçalves Dias, a Romantic poet from Maranhão who wrote this poem while living in Europe. The poem is so beloved that a few lines were added to lyrics in the Brazilian national anthem.

Minha terra tem palmeiras,
Onde canta o Sabiá;
As aves, que aqui gorjeiam,
Não gorjeiam como lá.

Nosso céu tem mais estrelas,
Nossas várzeas têm mais flores,
Nossos bosques têm mais vida,
Nossa vida mais amores.

Em  cismar, sozinho, à noite,
Mais prazer eu encontro lá;
Minha terra tem palmeiras,
Onde canta o Sabiá.

Minha terra tem primores,
Que tais não encontro eu cá;
