Bom dia, caros leitores! Good morning, dear readers! Last week we talked about a gravidez (pregnancy) in Portuguese as a tribute to Children’s Day, which is celebrated in Brazil on October 12th. And now that we covered the early stages of a newborn, how about we move on to a infância (the childhood)?

Whether you are a mãe, pai, avô, avó, tio ou tia (mother, father, grandpa, granda, uncle or aunt), the little ones are a part of our lives and learning a few words related to these wonderful times to communicate on the subject can be useful. Vamos comigo?

• Tenho ótimas lembranças de infância com meus irmãos! | I have such great childhood memories with my siblings!

• Crianças menores de 8 anos não pagam entrada | Children under the age of 8 do not pay an entrance fee.
• É difícil trabalhar online com duas crianças em casa. Eu não consigo me concentrar! | It’s hard to work remotely with two toddlers in the house. I can’t concentrate!

bebê | infant, baby

• Médicos recomendam que bebês tomem a primeira vacina contra hepatite nos primeiros dois meses de vida | Doctors recommend that infants get their first hepatitis vaccine within their first two months of life.

babá, cuidar de crianças, tomar conta | babysitter, to babysit someone or for someone, to take care

• Preciso de uma babá para cuidar do meu filho pequeno enquanto estou no escritório | I need a babysitter to look after my infant son while I’m in the office.
• Sally toma conta de seus sobrinhos de vez em quando | Sally babysits her nephews every now and then.
• Julie trabalha de babá para seus vizinhos para ganhar um dinheiro extra | Julie babysits for her neighbors to make some extra money.

criar | to raise, bring up

• Fomos criados em uma cidade pequena | We were brought up a small town.
• É difícil criar filhos sendo mãe solteira | It’s hard to raise children as a single mom.

berço | crib

• O bebê está dormindo em seu berço | The baby is sleeping in its crib.

canção de ninar | lullaby 

• “Brilha, brilha, estrelinha” é a canção de ninar favorita da minha filha. Ela cai no sono na hora quando eu canto | “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” is my daughter’s favorite lullaby. She falls asleep instantly when I sing it.

mimar, mimado | spoil, spoiled 

• Se você der a seu filho tudo que ele quer, você vai mimá-lo! | If you give your child everything they want, you’re going to spoil them!
• Eddie chora por tudo, ele é um garoto muito mimado | Eddie cries about everything, he’s a really spoiled kid.

brincar, brinquedos, jogo | play, toys, game 

• É importante ensinar as crianças a compartilharem sempre seus brinquedos | It’s important to teach children to always share their toys.
  

  

• Quem quer brincar comigo? | Who wants to play a game with me?

 dar uma bronca | tell off

• A professora deu uma bronca nas crianças por não guardarem seus brinquedos depois de brincar | The teacher told the children off for not putting their toys away after playing.

fazer pirraça | to throw a tantrum

• Denis ficou chateado porque seus pais não deram sorvete para ele, então ele fez pirraça no parque | Denis was upset because his parents didn’t get him ice cream, so he threw a tantrum at the park.

comportar-se, comportamento | behave, behavior 

• Se vocês quiserem ir à excursão, vocês tem que se comportar | If you want to go on the field trip, you have to behave.
