Favorite Brazilian Chocolate Posted by on Jul 30, 2009 in Uncategorized

For those who have traveled to Brazil, especially Americans, you will have probably noticed that Brazilian chocolate is excellent. Compared to American chocolate, which is watered down and pumped with chemicals, Brazilian chocolate is much more pure.

So today’s interactive question is: What is your favorite type of Brazilian chocolate?

I am partial to Garoto, which I think produces some of the most delicious candy bars anywhere. The best way to try Garoto is buying a box of assorted chocolate bars, which you can easily eat in a few sittings. I also love the Garoto milk chocolate hazelnut bar, which is amazing. Batons, which are shaped like lipsticks, are also delicious.

What about you?

Here’s the ingredients list from a Ghiradelli chocolate, an American brand, “Unsweetened chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, milk fat, soy lecithin – an emulsifier, vanilla”

Why do you claim it’s “pumped with chemicals?” That’s an generalization and a little outrageous. Maybe you’re referring to to some specific brand.

Brazilian chocolate may indeed be excellent. Buy why do you feel the need to compare it to ‘American’ chocolate, if indeed such a thing exists. Have you tried Godiva chocolates?

You might also try Swiss and Italian chocolates! I think you will find anywhere in the world that if you pay a little more you will get better quality

Adoro “serenata de amor” bombons do Garoto. 🙂

But… I also have to agree that your blanket statement about the chocolate there being far better than the chocolate here in the US is wrong. The better brands of chocolate here are as good as or better than a LOT of Brazilian chocolate, which I find in some cases to be somewhat “waxy” (for example, the Batons you mentioned). I think there are “better” and “worse” brands in both places.
I have always thought this waxiness might be because they add something to make the chocolate not melt as easily because of the heat there, especially since some of these chocolates are sold everywhere, in many open-air stores and those without AC.

    I love Lacta.
I prefer Sonho de Valsa (the one with the pink embalagem), better than Serenata de Amor (the yellow one).
I also like the green Talento.

The truffles from Cacaushow are also really really good (but not compared to the Kopenhagen chocolates, that, unfortunately are too expensive!)

But, in the matter of Chocolate, my favorite one is not brazilian! It’s from Suiça! I LOVE LINDT!

I have to disagree with all of you who are defending American chocolate. Hey, all chocolate is good in my book, but a friend of mine who is Brazilian brought my family a box of Garoto chocolate when she came to visit, and I have to say, I have never tasted better…that includes Godiva and all the rest. I am as American as anyone, but tasty is tasty…:) It definitely tastes richer and I am not sure why…but it does, lol!
