[Music to Listen to] – Part IV Posted by carol on Jun 4, 2016 in Brazilian Profile, Culture, Entertainment, Music, Video
Ei, gente. Como vocês estão? Hey, guys. How are you doing?
What are your plans for the fim-de-semana (weekend)? How about chilling to some Brazilian music? My suggestion is listening to the iconic Tim Maia.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1942, the artist started composing quando (when) he was only seven years old. On his route to acclaim, Tim Maia would hang out with outros (other) notorious Brazilian musicians, like Roberto Carlos and Jorge Ben Jor. The cantor (singer) spent some time in America, where he formed a group, The Ideals, but was deported back after quatro (four) years. In 1970, he recorded in first album, Tim Maia. Maia logo (soon) became a legend, identified by his raspy, potent and distinctive voz (voice), an original musical style, as wells as a fascinating magnetism.
Tired of unfavorable deals, in 1975 he founded his own label to achieve artistic and creative freedom. As someone who identified himself with black culture, Maia’s songs are representative of Brazilian soul, funk and disco music. Known for a bohemian, carefree lifestyle, Tim Maia had a breakdown onstage in 1998 and passed away shortly depois (after) due to heart complications.
His legacy includes a sequence of memorable hits and romantic ballads. Tim Maia now ranks as um dos mais (one of the most) popular and beloved cantores (singers) in the country.
This short video on Tim Maia’s life (narrated by American composer Devendra Banhart) pretty much sums it all up:
Now, how about we sing along to a major Tim Maia classic?
Gostava Tanto de Você
Não sei porque você se foi
I don’t know why you’re gone
Quantas saudades eu senti
I’ve missed you so much
E de tristezas vou viver
And now by my sorrows I’ll live
E aquele adeus não pude dar…
And that goodbye I couldn’t bid
Você marcou em minha vida
You left a mark on me
Viveu, morreu
You lived, you died
Na minha história
In my story
Chego a ter medo do futuro
I come to fear the future
E da solidão
And loneliness
Que em minha porta bate…
Thats knocks on my door
E eu!
And I!
Gostava tanto de você
I used to like you so much
Gostava tanto de você…
I used to like you so much
Eu corro, fujo desta sombra
I run, away from this shadow
Em sonho vejo este passado
In a dream I see this past
E na parede do meu quarto
And in my bedroom wall
Ainda está o seu retrato
Your portrait still hangs
Não quero ver pra não lembrar
I won’t see so I can’t recall
Pensei até em me mudar
I even think of moving out
Lugar qualquer que não exista
To any place where there isn’t
O pensamento em você…
The thought of you
E eu!
And I!
Gostava tanto de você
I used to like you so much
Gostava tanto de você…
I used to like you so much
Não sei porque você se foi
I don’t know why you’re gone
Quantas saudades eu senti
I’ve missed you so much
E de tristezas vou viver
And now by my sorrows I’ll live
E aquele adeus não pude dar…
And that goodbye I couldn’t bid
Você marcou em minha vida
You left a mark on me
Viveu, morreu
You lived, you died
Na minha história
In my story
Chego a ter medo do futuro
I come to fear the future
E da solidão
And loneliness
Que em minha porta bate…
Thats knocks on my door
E eu!
And I!
Gostava tanto de você
I used to like you so much
Gostava tanto de você…
I used to like you so much
