Livemocha is a “social networking” site based around language acquisition. It has four courses dedicated to teaching Portuguese. Two have optional writing and speaking tests which are reviewed by the community of native Portuguese speakers (who are often learning English, by the way). This is an amazing resource; within minutes of submitting your work you have helpful feedback from people who really know the language.
The Livemocha courses themselves are similar to the “Rosetta Stone” approach to language training. It is certainly worth trying and what’s more the Portuguese courses are free (at least for now).
