For today’s reading comprehension exercise, we’re going to take a look at a hot topic in Brazil this week: a new study about hypertension and Brazilian health.

Principal causador da hipertensão, sal é o novo vilão da dieta – VEJA

Excerpt: Depois da guerra travada contra o tabaco e o açúcar, as autoridades de saúde agora miram suas armas para outro vilão da dieta: o sal. Uma pesquisa divulgada nesta segunda-feira pelo Ministério da Saúde mostra que a proporção de brasileiros com hipertensão arterial cresceu de 21,5%, em 2006, para 24,4% em 2009.

O levantamento, que entrevistou 54 mil adultos, concluiu que, apesar de terem aumentado em todas as faixas etárias, os casos de hipertensão cresceram sobretudo entre os idosos – 63,2% das pessoas com 65 anos ou mais apresentam o problema. Em 2006, esse porcentual era de 57,8%.
