Brazil’s nationwide soccer championship came to a close yesterday when São Paulo FC won, beating Goiás 1-0. The championship included all Brazilian first division teams from cities across the country, and is arguably Brazil’s most important annual soccer event (aside from World Cup years).
But the interesting thing about the Brasileirão championship is that the four teams with the least amount of points are demoted to the second division, while the four highest scoring teams in the second division are promoted to the first. (See the scorecard here) As a result, Rio de Janeiro’s famous Vasco team, Santa Catarina’s Figueirense team, Ceará’s Portuguesa team, and Minas Gerais’ Ipatinga team were all demoted to the second division.
