The term jeitinho brasileiro is something that foreigners come to know very soon when they arrive in Brazil. It’s a deeply rooted cultural element in Brazilian culture. But what does “jeitinho” mean?

Let’s first learn the expression “dar um jeito”.

Dar um jeito (em) = to fix something
A torneira está vazando de novo? Mais tarde dou um jeito nisso. – The faucet is leaking again? I’ll fix that later.

Dar um jeito (em) = to do something about something
É melhor você dar um jeito nesse problema. – You’d better do something about that problem.

Dar um jeito (em) = to straighten up
Dê um jeito nesse quarto – está uma bagunça. – Straighten up that room – it’s a mess.

Dar um jeito (em) = to straighten something/somebody out
É melhor você dar um jeito nesse menino! – You’d better straighten that boy out!

Dar um jeito (em) = to work / figure something out; think of something
Não sei como vou conseguir, mas de alguma forma vou dar um jeito. = I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but somehow I’m going to work something out.

Now “dar um jeitinho” is a whole different story. The word jeitinho has two meanings, one positive and one negative. If you say: ‘Gosto do jeitinho dela’ it means that you like the way she acts, behaves etc. According to Irene Nousiainen on her blog, the “jeitinho brasileiro” is:

O jeitinho brasileiro nada mais é que roubar, enganar, tirar proveito, passar por cima dos outros, ganhar vantagem. Gosta do jeitinho brasileiro quem é egoísta, individualista, egocêntrico, só enxerga o próprio umbigo… os outros … quem? os outros? o que é isso? F*#am-se os outros… esse é o tal do jeitinho brasileiro que empesteou o Brasil, que faz desse país, que é um lugar lindo, privilegiado pela natureza, mas habitado pela escória do jeitinho brasileiro.

Não se preocupe que a gente dá um jeitinho.
Don’t worry, we’ll work soemthing out, even if we have to be a little creative.
