Russian has a versatile root that is used to describe ideas having to do with ownership, such as a property or a landlord. Can you guess what that root is? It is -хозяй-. This post will look at some of the most common words with this root.

Хозя́ин/хозя́йка

Хозя́ин (masculine), хозя́йка (feminine), and хозя́ева (plural) basically mean “owner(s).”

Да, кста́ти говоря́т, что живо́тные похо́жи на свои́х хозя́ев.
Yes, it’s true what they say, that animals look like their owners.
[Эльвира Савкина. Если впрягаюсь, то основательно (2002) // «Дело» (Самара), 2002.05.03]

This word can also mean a landlord/lady when talk about a person that rents a property to you.

Москвича́м не дава́ли мест в общежи́тиях, мно́гие из них посели́лись в ближа́йшей дере́вне. Хозя́йки сдава́ли студе́нтам комнату́шки на двои́х.

Muscovites didn’t get rooms in the dormitory, and many of them moved to a nearby village. Landladies rented tiny rooms to be shared by two students.

It can also mean “host,” or a person receiving guests.

Хозя́ин всегда́ принима́ет го́стя, предоставля́я ему́ всё лу́чшее, что у него́ есть.

The host always welcomes the guest and gives the guest the best he’s got.

Хозя́йство

Хозя́йство refers to a property owned, but a specific kind of property. Often, it will mean an agricultural holding, like a farm.

Е́сли роди́телям неве́сты не нра́вилось хозя́йство жениха́, то они́ могли́ отказа́ться от сва́дьбы.
If the bride’s parents did not like the groom’s household, they could cancel the wedding.
[Свадьба тюменских старожилов // «Народное творчество», 2004]

You may recognize хозяйство as a component of коллекти́вное хозя́йство or колхо́з (collective farm).

О́сенью вро́де бы учи́ться, а нас всей шко́лой в колхо́з.
Autumn should be the time to study, but our entire school was sent to a collective farm.

Хозя́йство may also be a technical term for a household unit, as in домохозя́йство.

Дохо́д от сда́чи со́бственности в аре́нду име́ют то́лько 5 проце́нтов домохозя́йств, остальны́е в ней… живу́т.
Only 5 percent of all households receive income from renting their properties; the rest… live on them.

Finally, it may refer to the property or economy of a particular entity; for example, семе́йное хозя́йство may mean “family economy” in some contexts.

Он прошёл шко́лу управле́ния городски́м хозя́йством.
His training consisted in managing urban assets.

Finally, се́льское хозя́йство is agriculture.

В ближа́йшие полго́да прави́тельство должно́ приня́ть ме́ры каса́тельно се́льского хозя́йства, с тем что́бы инве́сторы почу́вствовали определённость.
The government must take measures regarding agriculture in the next six months so that investors feel certainty.
