TED Talks in Russian: “People Are Conformists By Nature” Posted by on Feb 22, 2016 in Uncategorized

Many of our readers will be familiar with TED Talks, short inspiring presentations given in different subjects. Did you know that TEDx (independently organized) events were held all around the world in many languages, including Russian? You can browse talks by languages and watch talks in Russian given in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and any other locations where Russian might be spoken.

I would like to share a talk about the neurological processes underlying conformity. You can turn on the Russian or English subtitles by going to YouTube and clicking the CC button. Make sure you have the human-typed and not automatic subtitles on (this can be configured in settings).

I would like to look at some phrases from the talk and key vocabulary used in these phrases.

противостоя́ть – here: to oppose, go against
госуда́рство – the state, commonly referred to in English as “the government”
мне́ние – opinion
окружа́ющие – people around us

отлича́ться от чего-либо – be different from something
вопиять – to implore, supplicate (bookish), compare глас вопию́щего в пусты́не (a voice crying in the wilderness)

иссле́дование – a study

вы́звать – to cause, induce

показа́ть – demonstrate, show
скло́нный, short form склонен – inclined to

ста́я – pack (of wolves), school (of fish), flock (of birds)

I find this study fascinating. Do you have any favorite TED talks or other lectures in Russian? Feel free to share links in the comments so we can all check them out.
