How to ask someone out in Spanish Posted by on Nov 26, 2012 in Uncategorized

It’s today!

You have mustered up all the courage you have to ask your co-worker out. You have known each other for some time and you feel you have some things in common and it would be a good idea to get to know each other better. And you want to do it in Spanish because s/he comes from a Spanish speaking country. I’m here to help you with some useful phrases:

¿Quieres…? – Do you want to…?
¿Qué te parece…? – What do you say…?
¿Tienes ganas de…? – Do you feel like…?
¿Qué tal si…? – What if…?
¿Qué te apetece hacer…? – What do you feel like doing…?
¿Por qué no…? – Why don’t we…?

Some examples:

¿Quieres cenar conmigo mañana?
Do you want to have dinner with me tomorrow?

¿Qué te parece si almorzamos juntos mañana?
What do you say we have lunch together tomorrow?

Do you feel like going out tonight?

How about going to the movies on Saturday?

What about going out for a drink after work?

Hoy tengo ganas de bailar. ¿Por qué no vamos a una discoteca?
I feel like dancing today. Why don’t we go to a disco?

¿Quieres venir?
I’m going for a bike ride on Sunday. Want to come with?

Your co-worker may not be available or willing to go you s/he might say:

Te agradezco la invitación, pero hoy a la noche no puedo. ¿Por qué no dejamos para otro día?
Thanks for inviting me, but I can’t tonight. Another time, perhaps?

Me encantaría, pero estoy ocupado. ¿Por qué no quedamos otro día?
I’d love to, but I’m busy. Can we do that some other time?

I’m sorry, I’m already doing something on Saturday.

Lo siento, pero este viernes no puedo. ¿Podemos quedar otro día?
Sorry, I can’t on Friday. Maybe some other time?

¿Podemos dejarlo para otro día?
Can I take a rain check?

I’m sorry, I really don’t feel like going out tonight.

Me parece que a esa hora tengo otro compromiso. ¿Puedo llamarte de vuelta para confirmar?
I think I already have an appointment then. Can I call you back to confirm?
