Falsos amigos em português – Parte dois

Hey, everyone! Olá, gente!

Last post we saw the first part of our false cognates lesson. Let’s move on to the second section?

Pular – to jump | To pull – puxar

• O gato pulou em cima da mesa (The cat jumped on the table)
• Mãe! O Mateus puxou meu cabelo (Mom! Matheus pulled my hair!)

Puxar – to pull | To push – empurrar

• Você tem que que empurrar a porta para sair (You have to push the door to leave)

Taxa – fee | tax – impostos

• A taxa de entrada da Disney é de 85 dólares (The admission fee at Disney is $85)
• O presidente prometeu reduzir os impostos se ele ganhar as eleições (The president promised to lower taxes if he wins the election)

Atualmente – currently | Actually – na verdade

• Atualmente, Michel Temer é o presidente do Brazil (Michel Temer is currently the president of Brazil)
• Eu costumava achar que golfinhos eram peixes, mas na verdade eles são mamíferos (I used to think dolphins were fish, but they are actually mammals)

Lanche – snack | Lunch – almoço

• Uma maçã é um bom lanche (An apple is a good snack)
• Quer comer macarrão no almoço hoje? (Wanna have pasta for lunch today?)

Costume – custom, habit | Costume – fantasia

• Comer arroz e feijão no almoço é um grande costume brasileiro (Eating rice and beans for lunch is a major Brazilian custom)
• Vou usar uma fantasia de bruxa no Halloween (I’m going to wear a witch costume for halloween)

Legenda – subtitles | Legend – lenda

• Eu já consigo assistir filmes em inglês sem legenda (I can already watch movies in English with no subtitles)
• A literatura sempre foi influenciada por lendas gregas (Literature has always been influenced by Greek legends)

Bravo – angry | Brave – corajoso

• Meu pai ficou bravo comigo por ter chegado tarde em casa (My dad got angry at me for getting home late)
• Soldados devem ser muito corajosos (Soldiers must be very brave)

Novela – soap opera | Novel – romance

• Minha avó nunca perde um episódio de sua novela (My grandmother never misses an episode of her soap opera)
• Dostoiévsky escreveu muitos romances (Dostoiévsky has written a lot of novels)

Estrangeiro – foreigner | Stranger – estranho

• Existem muitos estrangeiros vivendo em Paris nos dias de hoje (There are many foreigners living in Paris nowadays)
• Minha mãe me avisou para nunca conversar com estranhos (My mom told me never to talk to strangers)

Dente – tooth | Dent – amasso

• É aconselhável escovar os dentes ao menos três vezes ao dia (It is advisable to brush your teeth at least three times a day)
• Eu bati em uma árvore ontem, agora tem um amassado no lado esquerdo do meu carro (I hit a tree yesterday, so now there’s a dent on the left side of my car)

Advogado – lawyer | Avocado – abacate

• Preciso falar com meu advogado antes de fazer qualquer pronunciamento (I need to speak to my lawyer before I make any announcements)
• Preciso de quantos abacates para fazer guacamole? (How many avocados do I need to make guacamole?)

Esquisito – weird | Exquisite – sofisticado

• Eu tive um sonho tão esquisito noite passada! (I had such a weird dream last night!)
• Esse vinho tinto é tão sofisticado! (This red wine is so exquisite!)

Colégio – high school | College – faculdade

• Minha irmã mais nova ainda está no colégio (My younger sister is still in high school)
• Ir à faculdade e ter um diploma é essencial para encontrar um emprego nos dias de hoje (Going to college and getting a diploma is crucial to finding a job these days)

With false friends like that, who needs enemies?
