In this post, we’ll be watching the first part of a video (in Jordanian Levantine) that talks about الأكِل الصِحّي healthy food that keeps us full longer. I have included a transcription and English translation to help you follow along.

Let’s begin with a definition of الأكل الصحي in الفُصحى MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) and highlight some vocabulary.

:الأكِل الصِحّي

الأكِل الصِحي هو الأكِل الغَني بِكافة العَناصِر الغِذائية اللازِمة للحصول على بُنية جَسدية قوية وجِهاز مَناعي قوي، وعلى الإنسان تَناول الأكل الصِحي بِكَميات وأوقات مُعينة حتى يَحصل على الفائِدة المرجوة مِنه

الغَني: rich

العَناصر الغِذائية: nutrients

بُنية جَسدية قَوية: strong body structure

جِهاز مَناعي قوي: strong immune system

الفائِدة المرجوة: desired benefit

Note: The speaker uses many words that are indeed in the Levantine dialect, yet there are also some MSA words. Can you point them out?

لكل شخص بجوع بعد الأكل بفترة قصيرة

اوقات كتير مناكل ومنحس إنه شو في؟ ليش رجعت حسيت بالجوع فجأة؟ طب قبل شوي اكلت خصوصاً بفترة الشتا منحس بهذا الشعور اكتر. الفكرة بالموضوع انه احنا خلال الاسبوع لازم ندخل اكل بيساعدنا انه نشبع اسرع ولفترة اطول. فشو هي الاكلات اللي بتساعدك تحس بالشبع وبتساعد على سد الشهية؟

A lot of times we eat and think, what is it? Why am I hungry again all of a sudden? I ate a little while ago. We  especially feel this way more during the winter. The idea is that during the week, we must eat food that helps us get full faster and for a longer period. So, what are the foods that help you feel full and help curb the appetite?

التفاح من ازكى الاطعمة وبيجي على رأس القائمة اللي بيخليك حاسس بالشبع لفترة طويلة والتفاح الاخضر بالتحديد. التفاح الاخضر فيه انواع من الاحماض وهاي الاحماض بتساعدك كمان على حرق الدهون

Apples are among the yummiest foods and are at the top of the list of foods that keep you feeling full for a long time, and green apples in particular. Green apples contain different acids, and these acids help you burn fat as well.

تاني إشي الحبوب زي العدس الحمص والفاصوليا ودايماً خلي طريقتك لطبخهم تكون خفيفة بدون اضافات مليانة سكر ودهون مش مفيدة عشان تحافظ على قيمتهم الغذائية

Second, grains like lentils, chickpeas, and beans, and always make sure you cook them lightly, without additions of sugar and fats that are not beneficial; in order to preserve their nutritional value.

تالت اشي البيض. البيض لو انت اكلت بيض مسلوق عالفطور وشربت معهم برتقالة او حبة فواكه حتشوف الفرق اديه شهيتك للأكل بعدها بتقل

Third, eggs. If you eat boiled eggs for breakfast and drink an orange or fruit [juice] with them, you will feel the difference, and how much it curbs your appetite.
