Happy Women’s Day in Arabic! (2) Posted by on Mar 13, 2016 in Arabic Language, Culture

Marhaba! I hope you found the reading comprehension exercise on Women’s Day in Arabic interesting and useful. I am amazed by how much one can learn from newspaper articles, if of course they are based on good research. Today, I am sharing the answers to the previous questions in the reading comprehension post and the trailer of a very interesting and well done movie entitled Suffragette. If you have not seen the movie, you should do it really soon. It focuses on the struggle of women in Britain to get suffrage, the right to vote. Enjoy and let me know if you have seen it and/or planning to see it soon.

1) Today, in our Eastern and Western cultures, the struggle seems to have scattered goals and of little productivity

2) In Europe, the cradle of feminist struggles, women organized in the second half of the 19th century in socialist political parties, under economic pressure and hard-pressed daily hand work

3) Rosa Luxemburg, Clara Zetkin, and Alexandra Kollontai

4) In the United States, the first strike for women workers took place in 1857 in New York City by textile workers protesting the length of the work day.

5) Translate the following sentence to English:

There must be a flood of expertise studying the international women’s movement’s history, achievements, and shortcomings; a critical study that takes into account world changes.

For now take care and stay tuned for upcoming posts!
Happy Learning!
Have a nice day!!

Salam everyone! Born as an American to two originally Arab parents, I have been raised and have spent most of my life in Beirut, Lebanon. I have lived my good times and my bad times in Beirut. I was but a young child when I had to learn to share my toys and food with others as we hid from bombs and fighting during the Lebanese Civil War. I feel my connection to Arabic as both a language and culture is severing and so it is with you, my readers and fellow Arabic lovers, and through you that I wish to reestablish this connection by creating one for you.
