Is Syria’s History Beyond Saving? (2) Posted by on Nov 21, 2015 in Arabic Language, Culture, Vocabulary

Marhaba! I am certain all of you were as moved as I was after reading this article about the condition of ruins in Syria. It is very unfortunate that Syria’s most important ruins are being either destroyed or smuggled and sold in different black markets. How will our children ever be able to walk around these beautiful ruins? I do not have the answer. Today I am sharing the answers to the questions from the previous post. I hope that these comprehension exercises are helping you out with your Arabic learning journey.

Answers:

1) Isis and other people are taking advantage of the war in Syria to tap into these markets and sell their goods on a worldwide basis.

2) Stopping this crisis requires a multi-faceted approach, where number one is [to] stop the war. Number two is to increase awareness of collectors and dealers and auction houses not to purchase material that has no provenance.

3) The Italian police have a fantastic database, and next year they will be changing it to work with Interpol. They do not examine the antiquities market the same way we do since they do not have the financial capabilities or manpower. They’ve got 300 officers dedicated to art crime.

4) The FBI database has 15,000 objects. The Interpol database has about 40,000 objects.

5) Translate the following sentence to English:

As for the United States: a 320 million population with just 16 FBI agents in the art crime team. And they’re also assigned to bomb duty as well.

For now take care and stay tuned for upcoming posts!
Happy Learning!
Have a nice day!!

Salam everyone! Born as an American to two originally Arab parents, I have been raised and have spent most of my life in Beirut, Lebanon. I have lived my good times and my bad times in Beirut. I was but a young child when I had to learn to share my toys and food with others as we hid from bombs and fighting during the Lebanese Civil War. I feel my connection to Arabic as both a language and culture is severing and so it is with you, my readers and fellow Arabic lovers, and through you that I wish to reestablish this connection by creating one for you.
