It’s Getting Hot: How about a Fruit Salad the Lebanese Way? Posted by on May 31, 2015 in Arabic Language, Culture

Marhaba! Billions around the world look for ways to cool down on a hot summer day, and for the next few months we need easy recipes for dishes, appetizers, and drinks to help us cool down. In the past, I have shared how to prepare Yogurt Cucumber Dip and Fattet Djej with Yogurt. Both recipes are excellent and easy to prepare on a hot summer’s day. Today, I want to teach you how to prepare a fruit salad (سلطة الفاكهة) the Lebanese way! It’s pretty easy and requires about 15 minutes to prepare. Please note that I have translated the entire recipe to Arabic! I am sure this helps with your learning, especially in such a fun and easy way!

In Lebanon, we add ashta (قشطة), clotted cream prepared with orange blossom water and rose water, on top of this fruit salad. Ashta is used in many Arabic desserts as a filling and in many others as a topping. We also drizzle honey on top of the ashta and some freshly ground pistachio powder and roasted almonds.

Salam everyone! Born as an American to two originally Arab parents, I have been raised and have spent most of my life in Beirut, Lebanon. I have lived my good times and my bad times in Beirut. I was but a young child when I had to learn to share my toys and food with others as we hid from bombs and fighting during the Lebanese Civil War. I feel my connection to Arabic as both a language and culture is severing and so it is with you, my readers and fellow Arabic lovers, and through you that I wish to reestablish this connection by creating one for you.
