Ahlan, Arabic fans! Our post today is about the role دَوْرof songs in learning Arabic as a foreign language. Research has said a lot about the effectiveness فــَــعــَــالــِــيــَــة of songs الأغــَــانــِـى and music الــمــُــوســِــقــَــى on learning a second language. One advantage مــِــيــزَةof using songs in the classroom is its flexibility مــُــرُونــَـــة. Songs can be used for different purposes أَغــْـــرَاضْ. There are so many reasons أســْــبــَـــابthat explain why songs can be a valuable pedagogical تــَــعــْــلــِــمــِــيــَّــةtool أدَاة. Songs can help improve the listening الإِســْــتــِــمــَـــاعskills and pronunciation الــنــُّـــطــْــقwhich in turn helps in improving the speaking الــتــَّــحــَــدُّثskills. Songs are also useful tools in the learning of vocabulary الــمــُــفــْـــرَدات, sentence structure تــَــرْكــِــيــب الــجــُــمــْــلَة, and sentence pattern نــَــوْع الــجــُــمــْــلــَــة. Another important advantage of songs is that they reflect the culture الــثــَّــقــَــافــَـــةof the target language.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of using songs in the classroom is that they can be fun. Pleasure الــمــُــتــْــعــَـــةfor its own sake is an important part of learning a language. Also, songs can add interest الإهــْــتــِـــمــَـــامto the classroom routine and probably increase motivation الــدَّافــِــعــِــيــَّـــة .

In the videos to come, we are going to watch some non-native students singing in Arabic.

This group of students is singing a folk Egyptian-dialect song by the folk singer Ahmad Adawiyah. The song’s name is “Karakashangy slaughtered his ram قــرقــشــنــجــى دبــح كــبــشــه” and tells the story of a man named Karakashandy. The song shows the creativity and richness of the Arabic language as it has so many new slang words that were derived from other formal words.

Here is the original song of “Karakashangy” by Ahmad Adawiyah.
